Guys who don’t take “no means no” as being meaningful will find that judges and juries are going to pay attention to whether or not she said, “No.” They will be familiar with the “no means no” meme and take it more seriously than they did twenty years ago.
That’s just one of the reasons why the guy involved should just stop. If she changes her mind, she’ll let you know. Take her seriously. You don’t really have a good choice to do otherwise.
It’s 18 minutes. Not exactly long in my book. Also, her delivery is on-point which suggests she is reading from a script she likely wrote. Hardly a ramble.
But, I digress…
She basically explains the male psyche to help others understand where they are coming from.
“Men have been conditioned to believe any hardship they face is their own fault because they have the privilege of being self determining.”
This is where most of us, myself included, are coming from when we say “you need to be responsible for your safety.”
Still, she puts it in better words than I can so you should probably just watch the video.
It isn’t sold as a feminist field…but s a feminine field and because of femiphobia men avoid them. The increase in women in all male dominated fields has risen amazingly. Med and law schools are equal male and female.
Well, anyway. Because a certain person who will remain nameless, but who has a certain higher level of access than the average user to this site, has no sense of humor or when not to over-exercise power, i’ll just say this:
There may not be any point in debating this issue, because almost everyone’s opinions on rape will be polarized and entirely dependent on pre-existing emotional concerns. I.e. that they identify strongly with, say, a daughter of theirs as a potential victim, and so they treat the issue like that.
I’m sure I could drag some facts into the debate but I doubt many people’s attitudes towards the things previously mentioned would change.
You are making the same point I am attempting to. I just believe that the matter can be discussed to find better ways to do it. And I think the number of jackasses can still be reduced, it is still a problem.
anyone have the stats on women who have been arrested for self defense ( and had the injuries or there was proof rape had taken place) but the male involved in the incident faced no charges?
Or there was the fact I came out of a shopping center in upstate NY to find a cop standing by my car waiting to confiscate my stun gun laying on the console, and then insisted on searching my purse for pepper spray or other defense items.
I had just moved there so did not know what the status on stun guns were. Last I knew they were completely legal in all 50 states. When I called the police after getting home I was told both were legal and so long as I was not witnessed or reported threatening people without reason it was entirely legal to own both or either. However, they would not return it to me, even though they agreed that I had in no way violated my right to ownership of it.
I had asked the officer who took the stunner “how am I supposed to defend myself if assaulted?” his answer was “be a good woman and don’t put yourself in situations where that can happen”
this is blatant misogyny IMHO. Automatic assumption I had this device because I act improperly or foolishly.
I dress damn near Amish level modestly, I don’t chat with people, much less men I don’t know other than a ‘thank you’ for someone holding a door for me (I’m disabled and walk with assistance devices) or to respond to a hello how are you with the standard fine, thank you for asking. However it shouldn’t have mattered if I was wearing a micro-kini and had “I like sex” tattoo’d on my forehead.
If I had had the money to purchase a gun and a license to carry (thereby instead of doing non permanent damage to an assailant possibly killing him instead and risking innocent bystanders) my “rights” would have been upheld.
I had purchased the stun gun after being robbed and sexually assaulted two years prior while getting out of my car on a dark winter morning in my workplace parking lot Apparently I was a bad woman because I worked instead of being home barefoot and pregnant…and that is not safe either. rape and assault take place everywhere, including home, churches, and hospitals.
I feel that any time you deny a woman the rights or opportunities that men have without a viable logical reason (for example, not hiring me to do construction…that would be reasonable my physical disability precludes it. If I were healthy and had the skill set but the decision was no because I’m female, that’s misogyny. Many will argue no, it’s prejudice, but really what is prejudice? Hatred because of a difference.)
I would have the same fear about stun guns…people will just use them haphazardly.
I am so sorry about your assault…sadly the reality is we don’t have out fingers on triggers all the time and we are vulnerable way too much.
