I am making a resume because I’m looking for a part-time job during school. I may or may not even end up using it since I’m not exactly applying for any tough job or anything, probably just retail help or something. I don’t know what to call the job I do now though.
Here’s what I do: I work on a temporary/as-needed basis for a firm that markets food products to restaurants, cafeterias, etc. I only work at trade shows (about 10 a year), where I’m basically an added set of hands. I mainly prepare food samples, although I do a lot of other things including discussing the products with potential clients. I pretty much do the stuff that the full-time employees of the firm don’t have time to do or are over-qualified for, although I do end up filling in for full-time employees in certain situations.
My problem is that I can’t think of a job-title that sounds good to me. Trade Show Helper doesn’t exactly have a business like ring to it or anything. I need a title that sounds like it belongs on a resume, while not overstating (or understating) what I actually do. Any suggestions on what I should call myself?
If you’re in school AND looking for a job, why are you awake at this hour? (Imagine a winking smiley here.)
The first title that leaps into my mind is “Girl Friday.” I don’t think people say that anymore. Also, I don’t know if you’re a girl…So here are some more modern job titles:
In the resume you can stress the work you do with clients. Also mention your planning skills, adaptability, and ability to work as part of a team. Don’t sell yourself short.
I’m sure you’ll get a lot of great answers once people start to wake up.
I’m up at this hour because I will be working swing shift at my new job, and want to maintain my sleep cycle on my days off. I’m going to assume Blunt is in a similar situation, as s/he seems like a responsible person who wouldn’t be up this late on a work/school night for recreational purposes. Unless of course Blunt is so worried about this problem that s/he can’t sleep. In which case, I recommend
Food Preparation assistant.
Of course, Blunt can give a description of the customer/client service skills involved with the position.
Good luck, Blunt.
Also, there is a book by Jack Beatty called The Resume Kit that might give some suggestions on how to make a resume point up your skills, if the job itself is less than glamorous.
