Thriller. I was eight. I was walking through K-Mart with my dad, I pointed out that I liked some songs on it, and he picked it up and bought it for me. On vinyl, dammit.
A very, very close second, and Hysteria was one of those defining high school albums for me. However, for a single song, I’ll have to go with “Rock of Ages”.
Weird, MY first album ever was Metal Health by Quiet Riot. My little brother and I sued to play Monopoly all night and listen to the album back to back for hours.
And I continued to buy a new copy every several years 'cause I’d wear out the grooves. Now I have a copy on CD. Needles to say, a good portion of my music collection is rather loud.
I played some vinyl last week for the first time in ten years (Godzilla, Blue Oyster Cult). Boy, did it sound like shit.
I’m with ya there. Although my first was Kiss “Love Gun”. I was about 7 or 8 staying at my grandmother’s place for a week during the summer. They thought it was a total waste of my money. Looking back on it, I have to agree with them.
The coolest part of the whole thing was this cardboard cut-out gun that came with. I think I had more fun with that than anything else.
First vinyl album: 1963, Meet the Beatles. My parents were shocked and sure I would go straight to heck, listening to that trash.
First cee dee: 1999 (I was a late convert–just borrowed my kids’cds before last year): Jimmy Buffet, “Songs You Know by Heart” and (same day) Little Feat, “Waiting for Columbus.”
Cassettes: Cyndi Lauper, True Colors, and Cheap Trick, on the same day. Don’t remember the CT album, but it had “Don’t Be Cruel” and “The Flame” on it, and I would make up dance routines in my bedroom.
CD: I bought Please Hammer Don’t Hurt 'Em, eeek, and I got a Michael Bolton CD around the same time as a b-day gift. I never listened to it, I swear!! OK, I did. And I liked it. Ewwwww.
“13” - the Doors first greatest hits was the 1st album I bought. There were some second hand copies of the Monkee’s albums around as well. Lots of singles, and I think the 1st was “Mony Mony” by Tommy James & the Shondells. Hard to be sure about CD’s, but I think it was something by John Hiatt.
And I paid for it in quarters.
I think the second album I bought myself was John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Album. I wish I still had that one too.
