Alright RTS geeks, what does the future hold for this standard of the genre? By my count it’s been 7 years since release and ISTM that leagues and tournaments are getting bigger not smaller.
It’s been a while since I was into it but I’ve been goofing around with it lately. It really is a slick little game. Will it become the next baseball? Enter the Olympics in 2034? Supplanted by something else? Fade to nothingness in 2 years?
Because the most important question hinges on those answers: When I have kids do I train them to be Starcraft wizards to keep me rich in my old age.
Man! I haven’t played Starcraft in years but I’m STILL waiting for Starcraft 2 to come out! I’ve never wasted so much time (about 3 years) on one video game before.
Anyone remember the secret “Hybrid” level? Not sure if it was on Brood War or the original. It should make for an awesome sequel when Blizzard loses it’s Warcraft fetish.
Well, I have been feverishly playing Command and Conquor:Generals and Zero Hour all summer, and they rock. Except for the theme (Present day rather than in space), they are pretty much indestinguishable from Starcraft. If you’re looking for something a bit different, try them.
Well, I think Starcraft is “dead in the water” because it has taken on a league nature and they don’t wanna f* with it. If they make a sequel it would have to be of a different nature or an order of magnitude cooler/more complex (I’m thinking 3d - asteroid belt battles ) It really is wacky, there’s asian cable channels dedicated to this stuff- 100’s of thousands of top prize money. Recent patches give replay game options and of course there’s millions of high level games to download and study. Starter linkey
It’s still a bit of a drag going into battle.net and looking for a game, generally only good once you find non-goofball people to play with. I wish they would add a auto-matching patch, like I believe they have for WCIII.
What’s the secret hybrid level? I was thinking of playing through all the campaigns again and I don’t remember a secret level last time … how do I find it?
It’s on Broodwar. To get to it you have to beat the Zerg level with the 20 minute time limit in under 10? minutes. You can use cheat codes, but don’t use power overwhelming, since that will result in Zeratul not being able to kill the Matriarch at the end of the level. It’s perfectly possible to do it without cheating, though.
You should be able to use Power Overwhelming, too, as long as you turn it off before the end. But the way to do it honestly is to just build horrendous swarms of Zerglings and Hydralisks and keep them going in a continuous stream at the Protoss base (ignore the Terrans, unless you need to clear out a couple of siege tanks on the way). You want to build ten full dozens, and as those die (which they will, in droves) keep building and charging with more, up to your food limit. I know that’s the way the Zerg are supposed to always play, but I still don’t like it (I prefer the high-tech Guardian approach). Also, when you get to the secret level, it’s a good idea to save the game right at the beginning, if you’re going to want to re-play it. Even once you’ve played it, it never shows up on the mission list, so every time you want to replay it, you have to re-do the timed level.
I hadn’t heard about Starcraft 64, but isn’t there also a Starcraft Ghost game for consoles? I heard that it was a sort of first-person sneaker, with you playing as (of course) a Ghost.
It’s a third-person sneaker called Starcraft: Ghost. It was in development by a studio called Nihilistic in conjunction with Blizzard and was slated to come out sometime this year, but for whatever reason, Blizzard cancelled that development and switched it over to a different studio. It’s slated to come out sometime next year.
