OKCupid includes the question “What is the first thing people notice about you?”. To which people usually respond “My ass or boobs” if they’re a woman or “My wonderful smile and eyes” if they’re a guy.
I think my question is more interesting and far more open to the wonders of sarcasm and Ahnold-esque one liners.
Despite my sense of humor, which can detour someone into believing I’m a rather selfish and despicable person, I’ve been called out on being an exceptionally nice and selfless type guy, according to a few coworkers who have taken the time to stop what they’re doing it and complement me on these observations of theirs. Just as well I don’t advertise it if what they say is true.
Taking a stab at a legitimate answer, I’d say my tattoos. The one on my arm is hardly ever visible, but even when the one on my ankle is visible (like when I’m wearing shorts or a skirt) people tend to not notice it for a while.
Trust me, if you had boobs people would notice them immediately.
Probably that I have a good sense of humor and I am a funny guy. At least I can make my friends and co-workers laugh fairly consistantly.
I’m a shy guy and I don’t talk much around strangers and even co-workers that I don’t work with on a daily basis, but once I have gotten to know someone and I am confortable around them I can always make them laugh.
I know what the last thing people will notice about me is… or rather will be… the epitaph on my headstone…
It will will be probably be something placid if my wife chooses it (A great heart, on which I rest")
If I out live her, it will probably be a little more wry… (A great hard on on which you tread’st"
My hair. Or more specifically, that it’s curly. I often have it pulled back in a pony tail, but the hair in the pony tail part is still obviously curly. But people I’ve known for years will see me with my hair down and ask if I’ve gotten a perm. ?
Strangely, I actually have an answer to this question.
The last thing people notice about me is that I have skills or abilities or interests. People always seem amazed that I have any talents or abilities at all.
“You’re an artist??? You actually create things??? I don’t believe it!!!”
“You play violin??? How the hell can a guy like you play violin???”
“You like to sing and dance??? You???”
“What do you mean, you like hiking and rafting???”
That I’m short. Well, some Dopers have met me, and they are probably thinking “How does she think we don’t notice she’s short?” But many, many times I have had people say they didn’t realize how short I am. It usually goes like this:
Me: I’m 5’2".
Person: No way, you’re not that short.
Me: Yes I am.
Person: Come over here and stand by me.
Me: (stands)
Person: Oh, you are that short.
I think maybe I have personal space issues and seldom stand very close to people so they don’t form any comparative idea of how tall I am? That’s my theory.
I have freckles. People who’ve known me for years will come up to me one day and say, ‘Hey! You’ve got freckles!’ Sometimes it’s because I’ve been in the sun and they’ve gotten darker, but it’s happened midwinter, too.
My height (or lack thereof, specifically). I don’t know why, but it always seems like people will know me for years, and then suddenly, one day say “Oh my gawd, Litoris, you are short!” One would think that since most of the people with whom I associate are way taller than I that they would notice how short I am, but it seems to be the last thing they notice. Meh.
I used to think it was because I always wore heels, but I have only recently (read: the last few months) begun wearing heels again after about a 5 year hiatus, so that can’t be it.
Actually, I can understand this. What amazes me, though, is that I literally dated one of my exes for 2 years (we’d had sex in some odd positions, you would think he woulda noticed the height difference – he is 6’1", I am 5’2"/5’3") when one day I happened to be standing next to him at the movies in line. He looked down and said “Holy crap! you are SHORT!” I thought “well, duh!” I found out later that he had always thought I was 5’5" or taller for some reason. Of course, I do point out that he was blond…
