The one Babs is wearing, what is that called? Is there a specific name for it?
It just looks so comfy, I want one…
(Stuck this in MPSIMS, didn’t seem like a very stellar General Question.)

It looks like a pair of wrap around pants. They are sort of like a sarong but pants. They are really comfortable and super easy to make. I saw one in a store once, made a quick sketch and made myself a pair. They do show quite a bit of leg when you are sitting down, but that could be a good thing.
oh oh I know I know!
I travelled round Thailand and they are definately one of the two styles of Thai fishermens pants. The most common and traditional style is loose trousers with a tie belt, http://www.thiptop.co.uk/index.php?page=trousers-standard
and the alternative is as a single piece of fabric that ties with splits up the legs.

I have 4 pairs, that set me back the grand total of £5 while travelling. If you can’t get any where you are, I’d be happy to send them along for you (I live in London, quite close to this shop)
Thanks, guys! There’s a couple of stores around here where I might have seen these trousers, I just didn’t know what they were. They looked like clown pants to me! (They weren’t wrapped up around anything, just on display, big as can be.)
Gotta get me a pair of those, they look like comfy summer-wear.
It looks like a Hippie-Chick skirt to me. Cute, comfy, unconstructed…Hippie-Chick!
~sigh.
And for years I was a little punk skateboarder, crusading against anything and everything even remotely hippy.
Must be the water here in Seattle. Ballard. Damnit.
If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to buy my cute new hippy pants, stop for a latte, bead me up some hemp bracelets and sign up for a pottery class.
While doing ollies.
I wonder where I could get a pair here in Chicago?
Any ideas? I would want to try them on, first. So far, I like Babs’ pair best.
Take pictures! Ya gotta share that visual!
Me, too, aren’t they pretty? I’ve looked around at a bunch online, and they don’t look quite as… drapey? Comfy? I figure hers look long because she didn’t roll up the waist very high. I thought she was wearing a skirt, but after Ludy and yingtongtiddleipo pointed out they were trousers, upon closer inspection, they are certainly correct.
I wish during the credits of the movies, they’d tell me what people were wearing and where I could buy them. Because I probably would. Or at least a decent knockoff.
Video - I’ll be screeching NOFX’s “Always Hate Hippies” while doing all this.
Though, sadly, it looks as though my theme song is fast becoming NOFX’s “Jeff Wears Birkenstocks”.
Don’t ask why I’m even in this thread, but now that I’m here I just want to say damn you for fooling me into looking at a picture of Babs.
(Mr Bus Guy has a secret lech for Yentl, but he covers it by expressing disdain for Babs, alot–never mind him).
The fabric for Babs’ trousers seems more drapey than the lineny type stuff I am seeing in the Thai sites. I also really like the hem decoration–I like a little Eastern touch, not half the pant leg!
I really want a pair now. I wonder if there are patterns for them? (too lazy to research this at present). I am always looking for summer pants that aren’t hotter than hell.
A little rough, but it looks simple enough. Just find a material you like and work from there. I’m with you on the simple design on the bottom of the leg, I don’t want hot pink, two-toned, design all the way up the legs… Babs’ are very simple and elegant.
And Mr. Bus Guy… I’m a closet Babs fan, too. I feel your pain. Cringe on the outside, love on the inside.
::d&r::
I think you might be able to get something like this at a sari store too. I see Middle Eastern women wearing the equivalent of light weight jammie bottoms under their saris around here.
They are! I picked up a pair at a local store/booth that sells sarongs and these pants. I figure I’ll make myself a pair or two using the pair I already have as a pattern.
Like Yingtongetc I got quite a few of those in Thailand for practically no money. They are nice.
Two bits of advice.
They seem to be most flattering on fairly straight figures. Not so much that you have to be skinny but I find if you have lots of curves (big hips to smaller waist) like me this causes them to drape a bit funny and they are just not flattering to curves in general IMO. I still wore them lots in the Summer anyway because they are very comfy.
Do them up “back to front” and tie them at the back as most of the links show. This prevents them blowing open. Even then, be ware that they are a bit of a liability in windy weather so be prepared to suddenly show lots of leg (or wear some cool leggings under them).
mrs jjimm got about five pairs of these for about US$2 each in Bangkok. You don’t need to try them on, as they’re one-size-fits-all.
Wow!cool. thanks for the pattern. I may just look around (guess I need to broaden my shopping) to see if they’re around here as well.
And I was kidding bout Mr Bus Guy–I have no idea if he really likes Babs one bit!
It’s a lust/hate thing. She was stalking me for years after I left her. ;j
