Well, let’s see. During my decade of private sector experience most of my managerial and other colleagues have been white males just like me. Over-represented in % terms as compared to anyone else. Can’t say, to be perfectly frank, that I have an overwhelming sensation that this significant (astounding in many respects) over-rep is a result of some greater degree of merit.
Doesn’t strike me that there is any way one could say you are in “the only period in recorded human history” – factually based on current conditions are historically speaking either.

1.Things were fairer “before”. Before what? Before when? Fairer in what way?
2.Merit no longer counts. Are you saying that the women and minorities do not merit the positions they now hold or that only whites merit them? If not, then what are you saying?
3.White heterosexual males are getting doors of opportunity slammed in their faces. In what context is this true? Where are WHM not afforded the same opportunity as everyone else?
The answers to these questions will help me understand why the OP and subsequent posts are not self-piting posts.
Biggirl, women and “minorities” (I put that word in quotes because as a group, minorities have me outnumbered) have every right to earn everything they get. I’m all for meritocracy. Yay, hooray.
My problem comes when little things like quotas hold me back.
Nowadays it does not necessarily stand to reason that the most qualified people get the position.
You know the story… woman doesn’t get promotion. Sues. Wins big settlement.
Coke discriminates against blacks. Lawsuit. Big settlement.
This all leads up to the fact that people like me, qualified or not, frequently will not get the job. Corporations no longer take chances with affirmative action. My possibilities for advancement diminish.
That’s the crux of my argument. I would love to be proven wrong.

Thedoors, I am in partial agreement with you about quotas. They do undermine true equality. However, (and this is just my opinion) I think that without them there would be no chance for anyone besides WHM to prove that they do have merit. I look forward to the day when quotas are no longer necessary.
