What is the song you can no longer listen to

Do you mean ‘Brown Eyed Girl’? My friend of over 30 years loved this song SO much, and then she stabbed me in the back and dumped me in a fit of religious fervor. I can’t listen to it, not that I ever liked it….The one I can’t listen to is ‘Dancing In the Moonlight’ by King Harvest (currently on an eye medication commercial a hundred times a day.). Not only is it overplayed, the poor guy who wrote it barely survived such a vicious attack.

Then there was “Billy Joe and Bobby Sue” (not the name of the song), another too often repeated story song about a pair of randos.

The ghastly ‘pina colada’ song. Every time I hear it I want to rewrite a proper ending where they have a massive fight realizing they are both cheaters, and break up never to speak again.

Imagine by John Lennon. Liked it a lot decades ago, now it’s just treacly shit.

Oh, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Way overplayed and over-rated.

There are three cateogories for me

Songs I never liked. (not the subject of this thread. But there are so many..)

Songs I liked but have been overplayed. (probably the subject of this thread, but there are so very many of these too). I’m not sure “overplayed” is exactly right, but I’ve had over 50 years since being a teenager in the 70s to listen to songs I liked many times.

Songs I liked but don’t care for anymore, despite not thinking it’s because I’ve heard them too many times.

In that last group I’ll offer:

Everything from the band America. Not sure why, but I just don’t enjoy any of them anymore

In real life, she didn’t, and they’re still married.

But the singer character isn’t Dolly, is some low-esteemer woman who is really afraid Jolene will get what she wants.

There were a lot of answer songs, but I’m still holding out for a murder ballad version:

And so, I sneaked back and caught her with my man
Laughing and kissing 'til they saw the gun in my hand
The next thing I knew they were dead on the floor
Jolene would never steal a man anymore

or

So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Jolene I just couldn’t take anymore

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

Yes, I am. Jolene is what i was talking about. See how much i hate that song?

Anything by Michael Jackson, for the most obvious reason. Many of them are just so damn catchy, but I no longer voluntarily listen to anything of his any more.

I hate that song too, but I loved the singer’s novel: “How to Murder Your employer”.

Thriller is still good. Of course having Vincent Price do the narration helps.

“Seasons in the sun”, Terry Jacks, sometime in the 1870s.

It was a worldwide hit, but I don’t know what it was like in your town. In Melbourne, it was very popular, and I really liked it myself: heard it on the radio all the time, memorized all the words (which was fairly easy). Simple melody. Simple lyrics Simple plot. No doubt that was part of the appeal, but – it’s one of the few massively popular pop songs that is never played on classic hits here.

It’s not one of those songs where you hear it later, and realize that there is some part of it you missed hearing or understanding before. It’s one of those songs that you hear later, and realize that you’ve heard and understood everything about that song, and it has nothing further to offer.

And yet – it still had that attraction for people who had never heard it before. Hit in the UK in 1999. It’s not a bad song, it’s just that once you’ve heard it 10 or 20 times, memorized the words and melody, you don’t ever want to hear that song again.

I was surprised to find out that West Los Angeles is a real place.

The title is actually “Take The Money And Run.”

Toni Basil was the only female cheerleader in that video. The others were men in drag.

Yeah. Watch it carefully.

You know someone was going to point out that date.

It was me, Dio!

Interesting, but not enough to make me endure that song or video again!

Garth Brooks has it in for me.
One of his songs reminds me of my son, who died.
Another one of my fiance who died.
Nice songs but Id rather a song make me happy.

Googling “mickey toni basil are the cheerleaders in drag” gives a link to a 2004 thread here on the SDMB.

I find no corroborated evidence that they are men in drag (though some of them do look husky), and a lot of cites that they were from a high school cheerleader squad in southern California. Do you have a cite other than your eyes?

They all look like women to me.

“Hotel California” is #1 on this list. I used to like that song but it is so overplayed. Dear God.

I also won’t listen to “Yo Mama’s on Crack Rock” anymore, because my sister, who’s high-functioning autistic, has adopted it as one of her stim phrases. She says that phrase to me at least once a day, and I can’t even get her to stop by ignoring her.

Without any corroboration, I’m not buying that those cheerleaders are in drag. That video has long been a point of pride for the Carson High School cheer squad.
