What is this magnificent piece and who is the angel singing it?

Once this site loads, you will be treated to a most exquisite ‘opera’ piece (actually, I’m not sure it qualifies as ‘opera’ but close enough).

Please, if you know, tell me what the piece is and who is performing it (could it be Kiri?)

Hmm…to me, it sounds an awful lot like Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance fame). The piece sounds real familiar, but I can’t place it for sure.

Since it’s a Korean site, is it possibly 조수미 (Jo So Mi)? She’s a famous Korean opera singer. I’m not familiar with her at all to say if it is or not, but it’s a suggestion.

Here is the pages embedded wma file. Tile header gives no clue. It’s 4 minutes long.

Neat! How did you do that?

I think we can rule out Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli, Vivica Genaux, Jennifer Larmore, Angelika Kirchschlager and Kathleen Battle. Sounds vaguely reminiscent of Kiri Te Kanawa, but I’m guessing no. Definitely a newish recording, so that eliminates the late greats.

That said, there’s enough reverb and studio tweaking that nothing would surprise me. Beautiful recording. Hope someone has the answer.

I don’t hear anything. Is the link still working?

Doesn’t sound like Sumi Jo to me, but Figaro may come along and prove one of my predictions dead wrong. He’s the resident expert.

Ditto Natalie Dessay, in case anyone’s about to throw her name out.

Yes, I think it is.

(Are you speakers on? And, it takes about 20 seconds to get loud enough to hear easily)

Here’s the music from the 3rd page

It that a boy?

Aled Jones was the name I meant to suggest.

I don’t know who it is either…I don’t think it’s Sumi Jo, but I could be wrong. The piece sounds a lot like Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Could it be another piece by the same composer?

Dawn Upshaw? Again, I’m thinking no.

No way–not without major studio tweaking. He simply doesn’t have … it.

I don’t think it quite sounds like her. I got my brother who’s a big fan of hers to listen, and he says it’s probably not her.

The way I know to do it is to go to View at the top of the screen, then Source or Page Source, depending on what browser you’re using. You could also right click and select View Page Source, but right click is disabled on that site.
In the page source, scroll down and look for this line, which has the link in it:

  <p style="line-height:100%; margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0;"><embed src="http://www.notid.com/music/link/02pulitzertrack03.wma" hidden="true" autostart="true" loop="-1"></p>

Now I’m prepared to say yes. I’m outta here.

I’m confused.

I’m starting to think you’re right. It might indeed be a male singer. Hard to tell. My PC’s speakers are pretty crummy.

A castrati perhaps?
