What is this song? What are these movies? And where can I find these books?

Okay, trivia fanatics gather all around because I have some good ones for you.

I’ve been wracking my brain for months and doing various searches on these things but I can’t, for the life of me, with only the little facts I can remember, find anything that resembles what I’m looking for.

And just what, exactly, am I looking for?

One song, three movies, and a question about a set of books that I’m finding it hard to locate. And so, I will tell all I know about these things (which, I have to warn you, isn’t much–although I’ve seen dopers get the stuff with less) and hope that realllllly good dopers will be able to figure out or tell me the items of which I seek.

First, the song. It’s a church song. A hymn of sorts. It talks about a “river up above” I think and about how “we’ll gather there” and talks about “when” we’ll gather there etc, yet it’s not “Shall we Gather at the River”.

That’s all I know about the songs lyrics and what it’s about, however a very unique fact of this song is, it has three parts, sung by three people, at the same time. All parts being sung over one another yet still combining quite nicely. The song starts with all three singing together and then splitting into three parts (with different words), which they do so for awhile and by the end, they all come back together again on the same line.

Does ANYONE have any idea what this song could be?

Okay, the movies now. But first, a story.

I saw all these movies as a kid (about 12) and, being amazed and transfixed by any nudity I saw at the time on the big screen , it was the only things I remembered, mostly, about these movies. However, even then, my mind must have known they were good movies that I’d enjoy the rest of the storyline of as an adult. Most unfortunatly, though, the only things I have to search with for these movies IS the descriptions of the nude scenes. I’ve run countless searches on google and familystyle and many other sites and no luck.

So here are three descriptions of nude scenes in movies. Let’s see if anyone can give me the name of the movies just by those alone (and if you can, I officially dub you a movie deity)

  1. Is a comedy. Made sometime in the 1980s. I’d say early 1980s but maybe as late as 1988. It’s about this family that goes on vacation somewhere, there’s a mom, a dad (who is played by a slightly older actor, say late 30s, early 40s–not the typical teenage character you’d have in risque 80s comedies like this one), and I THINK, two kids.
Anyway, one scene that sticks out in my head (and again, it’s not much to go on, so I’m hoping for a miracle) is when the husband goes into the woods for some reason and this girl in a bikini (someone he met briefly earlier) sort of “attacks/bushwacks” him and tries to get his clothes off/get into his pants/show him she’s available to him. He fights her off and is stunned and she’s meanwhile all hot and heavy and trying to get him down into the sand or on the grass and, in the process, her top comes off, yet this doesn’t deter her at all and she continues to wrestle with the husband while they’re both on their feet. I think he eventually gets away from her.

And that’s it. I know and remember nothing else about the movie, so if nobody can help me, I understand.
2. Another comedy. Another one made in the early 80s, I think. This one IS a typical teenage summer/getaway/vacation/collage boobfest comedy of sorts. It’s about friends (I think two but it could be more) that go to this place (I think it’s a hotel or resort) to stay (or work).

But anyway, the specific scene I remember of this one is, nearing the end of the movie, one girl calls one of the guys to her room and so he goes into her room/apartment and she’s wearing a robe and a towel on her head. She then gets him to start meditating with her, sitting in the typical fashion and closing their eyes. While his is closed, however, she gets more comfortable by taking the robe off and becoming naked…apparently enjoying doing it in the buff (however she keeps the towel on her head for some reason). The guy doesn’t notice this at first (as his eyes are still closed) but he opens them again in a few seconds and is astonished. He beats a hasty retreat out of the apartment.

I don’t remember much other then that scene but I do vaguely remember him going to a kitchen-like place after that scene and hiding or meeting his friend again. And that’s all.
3. I have the most info on. This is a thiller, I think. It was made in the 1990s sometime and in the very beginning of this movie, it is night and this wife is swimming in a pool with a guy (I’m pretty sure it’s her husband) on the deck. The scene right after cuts to the beginnings of a sex scene with the wife sitting on the bed and the guy watching her. She then slowly removes the top half of the bathing suit (it’s a bikini) and that’s it mostly…it’s merely an implied sex scene.

The thing about THIS movie, though, is remember the title somewhat. I’m pretty sure the title has the word “Dead” or “Ring” (or possibly both) or some variation of them in it. Dead Ringer? The Ringer? Dead Ring? Dead Sleep?

I know there are movies that are all called this but I’m pretty sure that they’re not it, as doing google searches, I’ve read the synopsises and they don’t sound right. However if someone can guarentee that the scene described above is in one of them, I might actually rent the movie and watch it.

And finally, the books.

I’m a HUGE fan of the comic strip Lil Abner and I’ve been trying, my whole life, to find a place or site on the net that has MOST of the daillies volumes. I’ve found a few sites that have SOME and, doing a search of any volume really, will bring up lots of links that you can find the volume, but they’re all over the net. No one site seems to have all of them. The most I’ve seen one site have is, maybe, 10 or 12 volumes (which is not that many considering I know the set has AT LEAST 28 volumes total, but maybe more–plus the site in question has major inflated prices; much higher then I’ve ever seen any other place have them).

So is there any site or place that anyone knows of that would sell the entire set or singles thereof at reasonable prices? I don’t even know how high the volume set goes up to.
Anyway, if anyone can help me out with any of the categories in here, I’d be most grateful. I’m not very optimistic as some of the movies have very, very little to go on, but I’ve seen miracles by way of guessing movies by just a short description on here before.

Could the song you’re looking for possiblly “Down in the River to Pray,” which was very wonderfully used in “Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Here’s a link to the Choral Public Domain Library. You can download a PDF of the score.

The King’s Singers have recorded a beautiful arrangement of the tune.

Aww, thank you for the answer but no, that’s not it. : /

I’ve only ever heard this in church. I used to go to a church called Valley Baptist and it was a song sung specially sometimes by three members (all males). They always sung it a cappella (which could be another helping hand in trying to find it) and it was about a river or fountain and how they were searching for it…and like I said, they’d all split off in the song (the chorus of it, the chorus was the three separate parts part) with their own words and even speed. I remember one of them was drawing their words out (one of the words was “come”) while the other two were speaking faster…and it was completely different words and lines yet it all seemed to combine and be in sync very awesomely.

The last line of the chorus that they all would come together on again was something like “looking (searching?) for a river (fountain?) up above” or something along those lines or variation.

Damn, if only I could remember other lines. : /

The first movie you described might have been Vacation. It was made in 1983 and had two parents and two kids on vacation. There was a scene where the father (Chevy Chase) meets a girl (Christie Brinkley) who he’s seen several times before and she attempts to seduce him. But as I recall it was at a motel not in the woods. Brinkley invites Chase to go skinny dipping in the pool with her and takes off her bikini. But there was no actual on-screen nudity in the scene.

No, it’s not that movie. I’ve seen that movie many times and it’s one of my favorites, but thank you for trying to help figure it out.

This actor was/is older then Chase, I think.

Could #1 be “Captain Ron”?

The song sounds like it might be a Shaker song. There are hundreds of these (the most famous being Lord of the Dance), but many of them share similar characteristics, namely the same lines being repeated either together or in the form of a round, and modal harmonies. When done properly they send shivers up your spine.

No, no, it’s not Captain Ron (another great movie, by the way, that I happen to own). This is a movie not well known. Rather one of those raunchy T n A movies from the 80s.

Could the first movie be Last Resort, with Charles Grodin?

Y’know, this is gonna drive the rest of us nuts as well if we don’t nail these down.

You know, that first one may just be Last Resort. I’ll have to put it on my Netflix and have it delivered to me this Tuesday, in which I’ll be able to verify it then. But I’m pretty sure that that IS it.

Wow, thank you.

OK, I’m going to have to call in the big dogs on this one – I’ll ask my formerly-fundamentalist sister who played the piano in a Freewill Baptist church for umpty-ump years.

Hmmm. I have most of the Li’l Abner volumes (I’m missing 9 and 11, from a quick check.) I’d be willing to sell at a fair price (plus you’d pay postage.) I’ll email you to discuss.

For #3, how about Dead Calm. She’s swimming in the ocean, not a pool, but other than that it might work.

You beat me to it, I was just about to suggest Dead Calm, not because I remember a pool, but because it came out fairly close to Dead Ringers (thriller with Jeremy Irons) and I have always gotten the two titles confused.

Are you SERIOUS? Holy crap. You’re a hero among men!
Athena, no, this body of water was most assuredly a pool, however, if I remember correctly, it did star Jeremy Irons, so it may be Dead Ringers. It’s just, I looked up that movie before on CNDB and the description of the scene didn’t seem to sound anything like what I remember.

But I’ll give both of them (Dead Ringers and Dead Calm) a try. Thank you.

Now if I could just get that second movie (which, ironically, is the one I’m most trying to find) and a handle on that song…

Movie number two is Private Resort, which was Johnny Depp’s second movie (the first being the original A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Yeah, the third movie is not Dead Calm, as I know it didn’t star Nicole Kidman. And about Dead Ringers…I dunno…the write-up just seems off. Plus it says it was made in 1988/89 and I’m pretty sure the number three movie was made in the 1990s sometime. I will order DR from Netflix though.

But no matter, really. Number 3 wasn’t too high on the list of wanting to find. If someone ever can just confirm Dead Ringers (or another movie) has the scene descibed in three, that’d be great…but if not, it’s fine.

YOU RULE. Thank you SO much.
Really, all I’m hoping to ever learn now is the name of that song. Here’s hoping freckafree might be able to shake it out of her friend. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s what she came up with:

Where the river of life….goes running by
We’ll look upon the beauty
That fades, no never.
And happy we’ll be……as ages fly

What a happy time some glad tomorrow
When we lay our heavy burdens down
[men] in …this lonesome valley No more to roam [no more to roam]
Yonder when the sun is always shining
We shall look upon his smiling face
It will all be glory
In that sweet home

In that beautiful city, of the sweet forever
Where the river of life
Goes running by….

Another guess: There is a River, the last verse of which is…
There is a river that flows from God above.
There is a fountain, that’s filled with His great love.
Come to the water, there is a vast supply.
There is a river, that never shall run dry.
That never shall run dry.

So the first movie was Last Resort and the second was Private Resort. Based on this trend, was the third one possibly Dead Resort?
