Haddaway’s famous, and probably only, hit song “What is Love?” has a really really odd music video. This is the song that was repeatedly used by the SNL sketch featuring the Roxbury Guys, which is strange enough, but they must have took one look at the original music video and figured whatever they did couldn’t be any worse.
It starts out with Haddaway catching a marble bust, then descends into a mad dance with a vampire in what looks to be a European castle during a thunderstorm. And part of the music video looks to be shot backwards then reversed for some reason. There’s a transformation scene where Haddaway goes from the blue suit to a male stripper’s outfit, complete with lightning, then he tries to hypnotize you with his eyes.
I just found that the lyrics, which seem very straightforward and simple, to be completely mismatched with the video. There must be a story behind it, does anyone know?
