I’m curious to know what kind of Adult Beverages the masses are into. Do you have a beverage of choice? What brands, types, mixes, etc…be as specific as you can.
My latest favorite is DiSaranno Amaretto and Pepsi.
White wine, but not a too-oaky or too-buttery Chardonnay (though I like Chardonnays that aren’t too oaky or buttery), and not Semillon or a blend with significant Semillon (I get an unpleasant menthol-type taste from those). Fortunately for me, there are a lot of white wines out there that fit that description, and I always enjoy trying new ones.
I’ve been told that the “buttery” flavor of Chard comes from the oak barrels. If you get Chardonnay that’s aged in stainless steel barrels, it tastes much dryer and “crisper” (or whatever the correct term is). I find Callaway and Tin Roof to be especially good in this regard.
Tin Roof possibly gets its name from the fact that it’s sold in screwtop bottles. The back label has amusing illustrated “instructions” -
My current favorite beer is Snake Dog IPA, from the Flying Snake Brewery It’s loaded with hoppy goodness. I first tried it around the time Snakes on a Plane came out, and it has flying & snake on the bottle, so I call it “Snakes of a Plane beer”
For harder stuff, I’m partial to a good scotch. For every day sipping (ie - affordability) I like the 12 year old Highland Park , but for special occasions I like a nice 18 year old Caol Ila.
Australian Chardonnays are usually not oaked- sometimes they (and some American winemakers) label them “unoaked Chardonnay”. I’m very into Aussie white wines, because they tend to be inexpensive and what I like. Fortunately for me, it seems that the less expensive a California Chardonnay is, the less likely it is to be in the style I don’t like
My cocktail of choice is generally a frozen margarita. The neighborhood Mexican place has a tasty & strong mix in their machine; and they serve pretty good food. Margaritas at home: Fresh lime or lemon juice, 100% agave tequila (usually Cazadores) & Patrón Citronge orange liqueur.
On occasion, a martini; Bombay gin & a twist.
Zinfandel is my favorite red. Whites? I’ve liked a few Sauvignon Blancs. And had a really excellent Auslese recently; the sweetness was not annoying since so many other things were going on. (Any help on exploring white wines would be appreciated.) Pink wines don’t get enough respect; damn that White Zinfandel! And anything with bubbles is worth a try (except for Andre).
On a hot summer day in Houston, I’ll won’t refuse an ice-cold Miller Lite. When there’s a better selection, I’ve been tending towards IPA’s. (Houston’s St Arnold Brewery makes a good one.)
Guinness is classic. With a shot of Power’s on St Patrick’s Day.
Does coffee count for the purposes of this thread? That’s probably what I drink the most of.
As far as alcohol is concerned, it could be anything depending on the circumstances. A Martini is always nice, but when I want something less imposing I like a shot of Scotch on the rocks, or perhaps tequila with a liberal squeeze of lime. I’ve found I like that better with Mexican food than a Margarita, because it’s not as strong and I can order another without regretting it later.
I also like wine, as my previous post above, but as the only person who regularly drinks alcohol in my home, wine is sometimes not as practical as the other options.
Beer? Forget it. It’s a free pass to the bathroom, two or three times during the night.
Usually beer. I like lots of types, but my favorites are Bass, Magic Hat #9, and Switchback (people outside the northeast US have probably never had #9 or Switchback, since they are local VT brews.)
But for mixed drinks, I like a good gin and tonic.
