“She tried to sit in my lap, and I was standing up..You ought to wean her, she’s old enough..”
Let’s start from the very biggining,
A very good place to start…
The story is fantastic, it’s really all about the Nazi’s, but it’s wrapped up in this multi-layered love story that’s filled with suspense and intrigue, and even ends with some action (the movie’s got everything pretty much, even comedy, remember the Captain’s line at the diner table…priceless)
So it has an awesome base to pile more on, and the next thing you’ll notice is the sets and costumes and the overall production quality. Now you’ll start realizing that the acting is also superb, everyone is playing their role perfectly and reacting exactly the way you’d expect (plus, Julie Andrews, need I say more?). Okay, so now you’ve got some really great stuff piled into this thing, but wait, what’s that, it’s, it’s, it’s lighting, the key grips are doing their job too, oh no, watch out, the writers are going wild, etc… and the next thing you know, the movie’s over, and all you can do is sit back and think “wow, my mind has been opened…I’m free”.
I have not watched the movie in a long time myself, I only watch a movie once, and have a severe problem watching anything again, mostly cause I still remember it perfectly and can play it in my head if needs be, no point in sitting through it again, mind like a steel trap and all that. The movie took on a whole new meaning when I started looking into directing, and that’s when I realized that all it takes to make the perfect movie is a perfect director, and whoever directed Sound of Music (I think it’s Jerome Whyte, but could be wrong) is just about as perfect as you can get, or at least for that movie he was.
That’s a damn good pick.
My favorite scene in that is when the POW’s are beating up Peter Graves. The camera focuses on the poor guy who’s been catatonic the whole movie, totally expresionless. He gives a little smile, before going back to glum.
The Third Man.
On this message board, of all places, I’m the first one to mention it?
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
I wish this thread was around when I had Netflix… I never saw Blade Runner, and there’s no video stores around me anymore.
Another vote for Casablanca.
Need, no. But there’s also the excellent writing by Robert Bolt, based on his play, which kept very close to historical accounts in many places.
Well worth the investment: Amazon.com
Gotta be The Shawshank Redemption
Every so often, I think to myself “I’m just saying that because it’s one of those classic ‘best movie ever’ movies.” Then I watch it again and go, “Nope, best movie ever.”
I should have mentioned Bolt. The Common Man, from the play, was not used, but otherwise it followed it very closely.
Charlton Heston wanted very much to play the role of More in the film, as he’d done it on stage more than once. But in his autobiography he didn’t seem to begrudge Scofield getting the role, and spoke well of his performance. And Scofield looked very much like the Holbein portrait of More, and even Heston mentioned that he himself didn’t. And he did do it in a television version, with Vanessa Redgrave as Lady Alice.
The Court Jester, beloved since I was a child.
hmmm this is only the second mention of “the godfather” in 94 replies (the other was #51.)
-
best performance by an actor in a movie. no one’s brave enough to mention a serious challenger to marlon brando’s don vito corleon (but online polls always mention de niro’s jake lamotta as a close second.)
-
a phenomenal supporting cast (three were nominated best supporting actor, two of whom eventually won best actor in later movies.)

if we are only to limit ourselves to the genre of ganster, the movie set the bar way above all others, may be the greatest gangster movie of all time.
My favorite is Trainspotting. When I still had a VCR, I used to put it in to fall asleep to the dialogue. I’m still in awe of the scene with Begbie in the bar, when he blows smoke in Renton’s face. The soundtrack literally changed 90% of the music I listen to.
If I could pick a second, it would be *The Godfather. *
Blade Runner
My favorite movie is "Oh God where Art Thou, Apocalypse Now,Godfather "
Labrynth
The Graduate
