What keeps online casinos honest?

There seem to be a lot of ads promoting online casinos with a variety of games, including things like slots.

A physical casino has substantial investment, regular auditing and its reputation. Yet even real casinos might kick out consistent winners. An online casino may have some of these things. But on the Interweb manipulation is hardly unknown. I can see poker being somewhat difficult to fake. But something like slots? What guarantees do they offer?

This article may give you a good idea about online gambling and how to tell the real from the fake:

How Honest are Online Casinos? - How to See the Danger Signs of Online Casinos.

Although it would be hard to know, a bricks and mortar casino presumably follows local laws. They might differ between Vegas and Vanuatu, but both might be regulated. For something like poker, there are expectations that could be mathematically analyzed. Probably serious punters stick to better quality sites with better reputations. I’m not sure how good the information from www, Onlinecasinosguide, com /TrustUs! might be.

(Just curious. I have no desire to gamble on online casinos.)

In addition to being regulated by the local regulators of whatever (often offshore) jurisdiction the online casino is located in, some casinos also hire external audit firms to verify that there are no shenanigans going on. In some cases such an audit is a legal requirement, in some cases the casinos do so voluntarily, so they can advertise with being subject to an external audit and assuage players’ concerns.

I’ve worked as a software engineer at three online casinos.

In addition to the posts above, what keeps a casino honest is the intense competition in that space. There are numerous forums dedicated to online gambling, just a whisper of inappropriate behaviour is enough to kill the business.

Casinos therefore are very open with their audits, payout ratios etc.

Ripoff casinos do pop up from time to time but they are very short lived.

I am not a gambler but if I was, I’d spend a little time researching the casino and stick with the big names rather than smaller ones.

FWIW the casinos I worked on had approx 93% payout rates - for every dollar put in the casino, 93c was paid out as winnings, a sign of how competitive the industry is. My former company still made boatloads of money.

That’s not such a good rate IMHO. European roulette has a house edge of 2.7% (and therefore payout rates of 97.3%), American roulette (owing to the second zero) of 5.3%. Blackjack, if played according to correct basic strategy (but without card counting), has, depending on the exact ruleset, a house edge of less than 1%. I would think (but I’m not in the industry) that online casinos have lower operating costs than brick-and-mortar casinos per dollar of turnover and can therefore afford to offer games that have even lower house edges than the brick-and-mortar competition.

Reported as obvious spam (first-time poster recommends an online casino…hmmmm…).

It was slots, and a while ago, so I may be incorrect. Certainly the costs are lower (and software is outsourced to us in the 3rd world). But maintaining a multi-lingual (9+ languages) 24/7 call center is not cheap.

I’m also reminded of another fact, there are only very few major online casino operators. My previous companies customised “white label” software (built in my own 3rd world country, not very coincidentally owned by the same shell companies that owned my previous company) - despite the labelling the customers were well aware of the single orgin of the casino software.

A rogue casino would be quickly cut off from the casino software in order to preserve the reputation of all the other casinos that use the same software. It is a really cut-throat world.

I loved this post from @kermert - an encapsulation of everything bad about online casinos. It brought a tear to my eye.

Yup, it’s the fear of exposure, even a false accusation of cheating that keeps them in line. I think it’s the same online or in person also. Who would go to a casino with a reputation for cheating? The house already has everything set up in their favor so they won’t risk what they have by cheating to grab a few more points.

Your opinion, is of course welcome.

Ideally, though, you’d back up your opinion with facts that address the question posed, “What guarantees do they offer?” rather than linking to yet another generic casino site.

Edited to add… the snark in this post is not aimed at TriPolar; but Discourse doesn’t do threads well.

No, we should employ a healthy degree of skepticism.

Shady sites have been accused of altering third party software. The company providing software to many sites presumably has no incentive to allow this. Is it easy to detect? How can this be done? (My knowledge of computers, up to date 25 years ago, is now quite basic.). I’m really curious.

And why you no trust good spam casino site? I gavareet Pravda! Is much fun! Many things, could you win, my precious. dude. duuuuude…

It’s the opinion of someone who’s very evidently paid to promote a particular online casino. That’s what I call spam.

Before you decide where to play, the first you need is to understand how online sites work. I have been playing for 5 years already. I started playing online poker for my interest, I was curious how everything worked there, but after the lockdown, I’ve decided to return to this practice. At first, like everyone else, I was skeptical, but then I realized that this alternative also suits me because it really works. But do not think if you do not see the opponent’s eyes or hands, you will be able to win easily, there must be at least some skill. Using my example, I deduced the main criteria for myself, then that the casino offers many games, then that you can really win in these games, all games have a high return. An important fact - money that is entered can be withdrawn in different ways and it’s such a pleasant moment for each player, the fact that you regularly receive bonuses and interesting offers. I didn’t think that I would play, for example, online poker, but everything is changing, and with new trends, we are here. Of all the sites that I have tried, I settled on one, for a long time it really brings me great pleasure and earnings, so, who are interested, I share a proven link

Good luck to all

Sort of related question but how well does online poker work? Playing poker in front of others involves reading their expressions, looking for tells and judging whether they’re lying. How does that translate online?

There is an interesting “scandal” now regarding televised (I presume online) poker that suggests some lack of probity.

This is a thread deviation, I guess. But I’ll throw it in anyway.

You don’t use any physical tells, just things like bidding patterns and how fast they make decisions, as well as knowing the odds on any given hand. Generally successful poker players don’t rely much on finding tells, it’s a once-in-a-while thing but they’re often really inaccurate, both from people sending false signals, the reader reading wrong, and poor poker players not actually realizing whether a hand or play is good or bad.

I personally found online poker incredibly boring because most of what I enjoy about the game is interaction with real people.
