Besides wondering who actually has the time to eat, 2-4 servings of fruit, 3-5 servings of vegetables every day, all you healthy [or not so much] dopers, what kinds of vitamins do you take everyday?
Me-- Vitamin E, Biotin [helps nails] Centrum, Vitamin C [500 mg], Glucosamin stuff for my joints, and sometimes Lysine if I feel a cold sore coming on.
I take Feosol every day-- it’s something like 300 percent of the U.S. RDA for iron. Supposedly I’m “borderline anemic,” according to my old doctor; recently had my blood checked for iron again and am trying to get the results to see if I still need the supplement.
Tried taking zinc for a little while, but it made me really sick to my stomach. Thinking of starting back up with a multi-vitamin, but need one without iron, lest I start to rust.
I started taking MEGA vitamins several years ago, because I seemed to catch every bug that came along and my parents never did. They took lots of vitamins, and my mom said “Why don’t you try it, it can’t HURT, can it?” I couldn’t refute this, so I started taking mega vits. I have to say, my immune system seems to have been boosted by this regimen. I seldom get sick anymore, and when I do it is not as severe. I am convinced that this vitamin regimen is the ticket to good health for me.
Also, I used to get fever blisters, or cold sores, on my lips if I got any sun;had a fever; was under stress. I started taking Lysine 1500mg per day, and I almost NEVER get them anymore. When I DO get them, they last a few days instead of the two weeks they used to plague me.
I know that lots of people poo poo this vitamin/natural remedy thing. I can only say that for me, it works.
I take a women’s multi vitamin, a flaxseed supplement (omega 3 fatty acid) and a fiber supplement. Since I began taking the flaxseed, I noticed my hair has begun to grow really fast. Whether or not the supplement had anything to do with that, I don’t know.
Taking vitamins does help round out an otherwise healthy diet. If you eat like crap and don’t take care of yourself, popping a few vitamins isn’t going to make things all better.
As someone who loves to cook, it has been my own personal belief that vitamins are fairly worthless. New studies frequently conclude that supplements are mostly ineffectual unless accompanied by a healthy diet. Seeing as how a majority of vitamins rely upon fat for transport within the body, I tend to agree.
The only vitamin I have ever taken in any quantity is C, in whopping 1 gram tablets and only when I’m down with a cold. I just try to eat a well rounded diet and figure that what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.
I watched my stepmother take vitamins all her life and get sick over and over. She also refused to eat butter and consumed margerine instead. Guess who had the heart attack at forty? Me, I eat almost whatever I want, stay away from fast food and canned goods and try to eat fresh whole food whenever possible. I get sick once or twice a year and wonder what all the fuss is about with these vitamins.
Right now, I’m taking pre-natal vitamins, but they’re making me feel icky so I think I’m going to switch to a lower iron formulation.
I try and eat as many fruits and veggies as possible & drink skim milk, but it’s hard esp. when Mister and TinyTot hate them. Speaking of TinyTot he gets one Pokemon Vitamin a day, since all he eats is mac n cheese, cream cheese sandwhiches, pizza and cheeseburgers.
AHA!! PROOF that you are brilliant just like I thought!! AND did you know that cute lil Terminator is following you??? SEE!! Didn’t I tell you posting that picture of you in black silk would have all the guys around here drooling???
lessee how long it takes for everyone to start screaming for a link to that pic!
** tatertot, ** I got sick on the pre-natal vitamins I was put on by my ob/gyn too, too much iron, and magnets were sticking to me in the most uncomfortable spots.
** Zenster, ** I believed as you did once, till I hurt my knee, NOTHING helped. I started on the glucosamin/chronodrin [sp?] and I was back walking again. Color me convinced.
