Oh yeah, this is my 1993 double-feature of wonderfulness!
L.A. Story’s score at Rotten Tomatoes is based on only 33 reviews. It came out more than twenty years ago, so I’m not sure if the reviews that have made it online reflect the consensus at the time. I don’t even remember hearing about it until catching it on cable a couple years later. IMDb gives it a rating of 6.6, and a box office gross of under $29 million. I can’t find a budget figure anywhere, so I don’t know if it made or lost money, but it was hardly a rousing success.
Judge Dredd - yes, the Stallone one.
I know a lot of Dredd fans hated it (and it does have its problems, the comic sidekick for one) but it had fine production design (Megacity 1 for a start) and some good action pieces. Just a good, mindless actioner.
I’ll also second Contact. It’s pretty good.
To the OP,
You left out one important reason it’s very watchable: Elle Macpherson!
john carter!
I’ve also mentioned this in similar threads, but the version of Heaven’s Gate that ended up on home video is actually a fairly interesting and reasonably watchable movie. It’s kind of in the same category as Waterworld or The Postman in being more notorious as financial failures, but while those had a mixed critical receptions, the theatrical version of Heaven’s Gate was pretty much unanimously hated.
On reflection, I think I have the ultimate stinker that I still kinda like: Battlefield Earth.
I’ve never read a single book by Hubbard, and I am in no way in shape or form a scientologist, but watching Travolata and Forest Whitaker play aliens just amuses me.
54 is a movie that tends to be hated by most people who have seen it. Mike Meyers is unrecognizable as Steve Rubell.
I very rarely buy movies but I like this one so much I bought it on Bluray.
And the fake eyes!
All the restaurants are Taco Bell! And Friend Bob =)
The scene where Peter O’Toole comes riding in on his horse is amazing. It always makes me flashback to Lawrence of Arabia. Damn he was a pretty man when he was in his prime.
And I love the over the top action hero by Kurt Russel in Big Trouble.
Both are great popcorn flicks.
Loved how ditsy ZuZu was, just wonderful. And the poor artist and the Mona Lisa!
And how can you not like Buckaroo, like Doc Savage he is perfect at everything he tries!
Both good popcorn flicks, though I think the bomb scene could have been done without, and the jungle chase scene could have been cut by three quarters in Crystal Skull, but I thought it was pretty well done.
Oh my god, the surf scene! I love that.
Toys had its moments, I love his half brother blending into everything.
I like Hudson Hawk, all he wanted was a cappucino …
The first half was better than the US half, but I agree, the dystopian Asia/Russia was pretty decent.
I have a liking for cheesy horror movies, European and Japanese, and Italian - I really get into Mario Bava movies.
Cemetary Man/Dellamorte Dellamore is a good example of strange =) A bit gory, and a bit existential and a fun watch on a weekend overnight.
I’ve never made a secret of my fondness for Death to Smoochy.
ooOo I forgot about that one - I like that one as well.
I think I’ve mentioned this before here, but I love the recent Nic Cage film Season of the Witch. I like most things he’s done, but even I can’t like The Wickerman.
Blair Witch. Most people hated it because of the ending, but I thought it was brilliant.
Fierce Creatures, John Cleese’s follow-up to A Fish Called Wanda. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 53. I don’t know whether that’s a “stinker” but I recall it being panned at the time. I really liked it, even though it was nowhere near as good as its predecessor.
I also have a soft spot for both Johnny English movies, which score in the 30s on Rotten Tomatoes. Certainly not masterpieces, but “comfort movies” for me.
I liked Joe Dirt. I thought it was sweet.
I’m a great/awful person to ask about this kind of thing…I grew up on cheesy movies, some of them even not featuring rubber monster suits with the zippers showing.
GI Joe: The Movie
The cartoon from 1987. As far as I know, I’m the only person in the world who actually liked this one. Including the creators.
Masters of the Universe
The live action movie from 1987. What can I say, it’s got a kind of charm about it. And I love it for the villains, especially the unusually competent minions.
Daredevil
Yep. 'Nuff said.
Stealth
Let me put it this way…you ever go to see a movie just because an actress or actor you like appears onscreen wearing a whole-lot-of-not-much? Well, this movie has the F/A-37 “Talon.” And Jessica Biel is in a bikini at one point, so that’s good, too.
I couldn’t really think of one, though I knew there were quite a few.
Then someone mentioned Nic Cage, and one occurred to me.
Ghost Rider. I’m especially fond of the villain being hoist by his own petard when his plan comes to fruition, and it actually makes it possible for GR to beat him. That, alone, makes the whole damn film worth while.
Oh…related…Constantine. Lousy adaptation of Hellblazer? Most certainly. Bad film in its own right? By no means.
Kurt Russel wasn’t the hero of Big Trouble, he was the comic sidekick. Most people don’t get that.
I have no idea how Pitch Black is poorly reviewed. I thought it was quite good sci fi.
“The Mists of Avalon” - TV miniseries featuring Julianna Marguelies - I don’t know if it’s a ‘stinker’, I read a lot of complaints that it didn’t follow the book or something. And I watched it twice on TV some years ago, and it has since disappeared never to be seen again. But I live, yes, live for that kind of costume mythological thing. (“Merln”, “Excalibur”, “Camelot” - I am so there.) “Camelot” was a failure, wasn’t it? Not for me!
