What movies were pretty much regarded as stinkers, but you secretly enjoy?

In the decade or so since I first saw that movie, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to use the phrase “totally gay nordic dudes” in real life. Still waiting…

The Kid & I - I usually hate maudlin, sappy movies, and this one is as sappy as they come, but I still enjoy it. It’s a Tom Arnold vehicle, written by him, about helping a teen with cerebral palsy to realize his dream of being an action star.

Your skill with numbers is impressive! You should become a political commentator!

Colin Ferguson, hands down.

Yes, hilarious. The hand grenade trap wiping out then entire squad one by one alone had me in stitches.

I hope you are serious and not think I made a mistake with numbers…

I just recently watched the DVD. It still holds up, if a little slow paced compared to what we’re used to these days.

AI was well reviewed.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I’ll even go as far as to say it’s my second favorite of the Star Trek movies.

I’ve never really quite gotten the hate for it, but then again I’m a sucker for these types of slow, ponderous sci-fi epics.

Also, I love the gratuitous close-ups of the Enterprise.

I still watch my copy of Jersey Girl from time to time. I know Kevin Smith polarizes this board but I genuinely think it’s a solidly entertaining, if not particularly great, movie. Affleck is charming as a douchebag-turned-doting father, George Carlin is cranky and hilarious, and there’s a full Sweeney Todd number! Plus, the immortal line: “Mark my words; you’re going to give her the crotch-rot.” I don’t get the hate. shrug

Also, it’s been many years since I saw it but I was surprised how much I enjoyed It’s Pat. I’d totally watch that again.

I liked it ok, but it was disappointing that it was basically “The Changeling” with a bigger budget. A lot of us were hoping that it would have taken us, well, where no episode had gone before. A lot of the hate comes from that.

It sure had great music!

Aeon Flux - 10% on Rotten Tomatoes - I thought it was great; artistic visual scenes! Plot silly, but more coherent than a lot of higher rated SF. I mean, it was way better than Wanted, which got 71% on RT, in all areas (and which I didn’t like at all) - performance, plot, sci fi elements, action.

Grease II - 23% on Rotten Tomatoes - Dumb as rocks, but funny and endearing. I enjoyed it a lot anyway. Watched it over and over on cable at the time, and intermittently ever since.

Eddie and the Cruisers - 38% on Rotten Tomatoes - I loved this movie so much when it came out. Another one I watched over and over. Only rock concert I went to in college was the band that did the music for this movie.

I also really liked Last Action Hero. I don’t think I even realized it was considered bad; I knew some people made fun of it but that’s common with good movies too  It reminded me of Purple Rose of Cairo, another movie I really liked

I see what you did there.

Practically every movie adjudged a stinker by Time Magazine from the 70s to the 90s earned mega bucks and enjoyed the world over.

Tank Girl was trashed by critics, and regularly makes "Worst Comic To Movie Adaptation " lists, but I like it just fine, especially the Liquid Silver scenes. And the soundtrack is fucking awesome.

God, I HATED that movie. I paid $1 to see it, and walked out during the nude scenes. It was THAT bad.

The Last Boy Scout. 44% critic review at Rotten Tomatoes. It is so over the top that it plays out like a parody of action movies. The dialogue is horrible ("It’s one of them new plastic keys… the kind that shred!), the characters are all nasty people (even the little girl), it has every cliche in the book… and I love it. Saw it in theaters, have it on VHS, laserdisc, and DVD.

The Island. 40% critic review. I think I like it precisely because I had low expectations for it… bought it on DVD for $5 simply to have something to watch on lunch break at work, and I actually enjoyed it.

Dracula 2000. 14% critic review. Overly twee story with really obvious religious themes (Mary works at a Virgin Record store… hey, it’s the Virgin Mary!), but it’s an enjoyable romb and has a topless Vitamin C.

Madhouse (1991 comedy). 0% critic review. It’s just silly slapstick comedy, kind of like the Tom Hanks movie The Money Pit (47%). I turn my brain off when watching either one of these.

I actually like that movie, it is one of the few realistic depictions of cloning in film.

Agreed.

And I fucking love Idiocracy. Is it really considered a stinker? That makes me terribly sad.

And holy crap yes, Boondock Saints. How can anyone not like this movie? Whatever the critics’ greivances are with it, I DON’T GIVE A SHIT!

But fuck Season of the Witch. Whatever else that movie was, it was a glaring example of ignorance and religious priviledge. I usually forgive a little sexism, racism, ignorance, priviledge etc in movies just because it’s so prevalent, but seriously, somebody needs to do their fucking research.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, mostly because I had fun thinking up ways it could be better. For example, all the characters except Tom Sawyer get to show off what they’re famous for. Why didn’t Tom Sawyer get a chance to con somebody? Or fake his death?

My husband (Doper Andy L) pointed out that Tom Sawyer should be substantially older than he’s shown to be. Maybe he’s got a magic portrait hidden away the way Dorian Gray does.
