What music do you want to die to?

I’ve actually given this some thought. If I’m lucky enough to die in bed, alert and aware enough to hear music I’ve chosen… what would it be? I would really like to curate the last music I ever hear.

Here’s what would be on the mix tape:

Blue Danube Waltz
Makes me think of the larger universe and the beauty of space

Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band -----> With a Little Help From My Friends
Sgt Pepper’s was the first album I owned

Blackbird
I learned guitar just so I could play this song

Here Comes the Sun
Again, the Beatles were my primary influence from a young age. I learned to fingerpick this one too.

Tiny Dancer
I’m more of a music person, than a lyrics person. This song is lovely and seems to tell a story. It also reminds me of a favorite film (Almost Famous).

Eternal Flame
Another beautiful song, and it reminds me of an early love

These two remind me of when I was a young athlete and could do some skillful things very fast:
Root Beer Rag

Misirlou

8 Miles High
I’ve spent a few thousand hours up there

God Only Knows
I’m not religious or spiritual, but I like this one all the same.

And finally… If I time it right… I want to die just as this one ends:

Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight

Granted, difficult to die on cue. But I’ll give it my best shot.

I’d like to see some other folks’ death playlists. Let’s say, an hour of music and you croak just as the last cut finishes

“Deacon Blues” by Steely Dan. It’s the perfect song to me (from “Aja”, my choice for perfect album) AND some of the lyrics remind me of my life.

I’d like to die listening to the Beatles Abbey Road, It’s the first music I remember hearing in this world, might as well go out that way.

Oh crap, I tried to edit after the time limit and then hit ‘discard’. I thought that would discard the edit, but it got rid of the whole post!

Edit: Wait, it’s back. Stupid board software… And I just wanted to put a period at the end.

An hour of Weird Al. The problem is cutting it down to just an hour.

I’d like to go out laughing, so something by Slim Gaillard*. Maybe Momma’s In the Kitchen (But We’ve Got Pop On Ice).

*To Slim Gaillard, life was on big O-Roony."
–Jack Kerouac.

I’m a dyed in the wool atheist but I think that’s the prettiest song ever put on record and would not be disappointed if that was the last song I heard before I become worm chow. As for the rest of the hour, just put (the nonsensically named) “Ballad of Johnny Horton” by Frank Black on a loop. Something about this instrumental just makes me think of all of the travels and adventures in my life.

Tokushizu - can I assume that you plan to “die behind the wheel”? lol.

Nilsson’s “I’d Rather Be Dead” would fit the bill, I think.

I hope not, but with the way my sister drives (I currently don’t have a driver’s license), that may be a possibility!

Edit: On second thought, if she’s driving, it wouldn’t be me behind the wheel!

I’ve been told by audiophiles that Steely Dan is one of the go-to artists you play to test your new audio system (way beyond ear buds). Their attention to producing perfect sound was bordering on obsessive. Great music too.

Maybe “The End” by The Doors for me. It’s not perfect for me lyrically but I do like the song and kinda seems on point.

Aja is the only album I’ve ever bought, lost and repurchased (a total of 3 times.). I listened to it the other day for the first time in ages and it’s so good it had me in tears. Unfortunately with Walter Becker having passed away, I will never be able to see Steely Dan in concert (and as much as I love Donald Fagen, for me it would have to have been both he and Walter Becker together for a true Steely Dan concert.)

Zip City. Drive-by Truckers.

The Long And Winding Road - Beatles

Blackbird - Beatles

Feeling Good - Nina Simone’s version

A Song For You - Ruby Wilson’s version

At Last - Etta James version

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony

And finish with:

Voodoo Child - Robert Randolph and The Family Band version

Anything that bothers the people hanging around annoying me when I’m trying to die.

Mozart’s Requiem in D minor

Spheres…

Aja is great to be sure but I certainly hope you have listened to some of their other albums. I might put “Can’t Buy a Thrill” ahead of Aja. “Pretzel Logic” has to be in the discussion too.

See Me, Feel Me from Live at Leeds.
