And, related to his (possible) age vs. rank: it was common for members of the Navy (and other US armed forces) to be promoted rapidly during WW2.

Another possibility is that he lied about his age when he enlisted; that’s what my dad did in the spring of '42.

I don’t know the date of this image but it’s from a CD of stuff used in his 90^th birthday party.
