No, no, no, NO!. Jeeves is EEEVIL, I tell you. EEEVIL! He’s manipulative, corrupt and a user! Sure, he solves all of Bertie’s problems for Bertie, but always at a cost to Bertie’s self-image and public reputation. Not only does each and every adventure end up leaving yet more people convinced that Bertie is an amiable twit - but these same plans that Jeeves comes up with always end up improving his own reputation for sagacity.
I thought of Norrin as well, but I’m not sure how fearless he is; he’s mostly supposed to be an archetype of virtue and self-sacrifice, which doesn’t necessarily imply courage. Also, once he had the power of the Silver Surfer, he’d likely have been disqualified on the same grounds as Superman–powerful enough as it is. Likewise Magneto, whom someone else mentioned.
I really like the idea of Atticus Finch, but I don’t think he’d take it and I think the guardians would disqualify persons who had no intention of using the power. Jack Bauer, though, would definitely take it. The only question is would he remain a hero or become Sinestro? (He’s definitely a law & order, the greater good, follow-me-I know what i’m doing kind of fellow).
Well not really. if you remember the books King (and pretty much everyone close to Roland, including himself) go on and on about his lack of imagination. Not a great thing to have when weilding a power ring.
A better pick from the Darktowerverse would be Eddie Dean, or Oy. but only casue I thik Oy was cool.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned the most fearless, most determined, most strong-willed, most noblest hero of them all… Optimus Prime. G1 Optimus Prime, all others are just wanna-be’s.
Would he be allowed to hold a ring? Has there ever been a sentient robot as a Corp. member?
I’m pretty sure there was at least one sentient robot in the Corps, pre-Crisis, and I think the pre-Crisis history still holds for GL & Company. Assuming Optimus wasn’t disqualified on the already powerful enough grounds–and the fact that he’s leader of the Autobot army/nation–I think he’d be a lock.
As Andy Weir points out, he’s a SAINT–he TURNED THE TIDE OF BATTLE!
If sentient robots are allowable, would Data qualify? And Sefton’s mention of Archie Goodwin made me think of Archie Andrews. I am not so sure he has the willpower but he otherwise has the character for it.
I was figuring he’d be offered the ring as Norrin, not as the Silver Surfer, for that very reason. Which in a universe-mashup crossover could lead to an interesting plotline: The GL Corps offers Norrin Radd a power ring, and he accepts. Unfortunately, while he’s off Zenn-La, Galactus stops by – and there’s no one on the planet who thinks to make the herald trade. So Galactus eats it.
That, or the Green Lantern Corps has to take on Galactus – I assume that’s been done in some sort of crossover scenario, right?
Anyway, I think Radd is smart, virtuous, and courageous enough to qualify.
(And no one has any comments on my nomination of Philip Marlowe? I’m crushed.)
I must wholeheartedly concur. Ben Grimm would make a fantastic GL. Tough, fearless, noble, determined, intelligent beyond his appearance and tenacious beyond belief.
Ben Grimm with an Oan ring would give a whole new meaning to the phrase “It’s clobberin’ time!”
I hereby nominate Kwai Chang Caine, who was patient, sagacious, courageous and gentle all at the same time. He always strove to his utmost to prevail without conflict, but fear was never even slightly a factor in his decision to back down from a fight. And with the limited tools at his disposal, he invariably did a great deal of good.
I would disqualify Data on account of a lack of imagination and for the same reason he never tried for promotion: he would need to run the Picard emulator program. Naw, he’s too busy trying to learn to be human to want a ring that makes him powerful. (Keep in mind, he probably could have had his choice of command if he wanted it - just turn on the old emulator and rocket up the ranks.)
And I’m kinda bummed no one has said anything about my nomination for Felix.
Let’s get really bizzarre: I’ll also nominate John Murdock. (yessssss)
