Shooting, Fencing, Judo, Greco Roman Wrestling, field hockey, and sailing are all sports that I have no interst in so I haven’t really been searching them out but I haven’t ever seen them on TV either. I may have seen a Greco Roman Wrestling match on TV when that american beat the Russian who’s never lost.
I’ve always liked Archery and I search it out, but I’ve never found it on TV.
Any competition that doesn’t have a Japanese athlete entered in it, and several sports like fencing which do but which don’t have a high enough profile or a Japanese enough flavor or something.
Judo matches got a lot of coverage, as did swimming. Fencing, Tae Kwon Do, archery, etc. may have been broadcast in the ghetto hours late at night. If so, I never saw it on the schedule. Looking at NHK’s schedule for today it’s a good bet that everything included has a Japanese athlete in it, if the team isn’t explicitly mentioned.
Women’s hockey (JPN vs GER)
Baseball (JPN vs CAN)
Men’s track
Women’s triathlon
Women’s soccer
Softball (JPN vs CAN)
Women’s trampoline (?!)
Synchronized swimming: duet
Men’s volleyball (JPN vs USA)
Men’s diving
Gymnastics
The only thing that doesn’t feature a Japanese athlete or team is Men’s basketball, which is US vs. Germany. This means I haven’t seen most of the same competitions as you guys, or probably a lot of people in the rest of the world.
I’ve seen no shooting whatsoever and about five minutes of archery. No equestrian coverage at all. To be fair, I haven’t been around the tube that much either Sunday but still there are a lot of things that NBC could do besides find yet another way to kiss Michael Phelps’ ass.
Why on earth did NBC think it would be a good idea to have TWO seperate schedules for “Channels with Coverage” and then “Venues with Events being Televised”
I mean, Apparently, its too hard for NBC to tell me simply, what channel has what event when.
Well, it’s a class in sailing. I only know that becase GB got a gold in it, so it has briefly become a major sport. It’s pronounced something like “oongling”, they tell us, or like the ü in German. Perhaps a Norwegian can correct me.
Reminds me of the first time my mom came to one of my fencing matches. I’m not sure what she expected (Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone, probably), but she was quite disappointed. She thought it looked like a cat fight. A lot of slow back-and-forth as the opponents sized each other up, followed by a brief flurry where you couldn’t tell what was going on.
I think rhythmic gymnastics is really cool. In past years, it seems like they’ve usually shown a little bit, but I haven’t managed to catch any this year.
Weird. I can’t dispute what you saw, but I’ve been going to an Olympic Archery club the last 2 weeks and they told me very matter-of-factly that archery was not broadcast and I had to go online to see it. I figured they would know since they had members competing.
True, but remember all of the rain during this Olympics. NBC has used some previously recorded footage during some of the rain down times. So, I can easily see them slipping in coverage of archery during a slow time.
