Wow, that’s amazing. I can’t believe I missed that when it originally came out. It does bring up a question for me though. AIUI recording a phone conversation is often illegal unless the parties are aware that the recording is taking place. Is this restriction on recording only for the recorded conversation to be admissible in a court or something? I know when I call many service lines a recorded mesage states “this call may be monitored for quality puposes”. Does this disclaimer mean that I can freely record the conversation without warning the CSR that I am doing so? Anyone have any insight- I can think of a number of places where I’d love to record calls just in case I deal with any more angry bureaucrats.
For the most part, you can record any conversation with the knowledge and permission of only one party, in this case yourself. There are states which require the permission of all people involved so you would need to make sure whomever you’re talking to isn’t located in one of them or inform them that they are being recorded.
Thank you Projammer.
I wonder, though–do the laws apply to knowing who all is recording you? Every call to the call center I work at is recorded. If a customer also records a call, the CSR couldn’t claim he wasn’t aware the call was being recorded–he just wasn’t aware it was being recorded at both ends. Does that generally matter?
