This is a little rambling, but it’s not like you have any social events to go to, amirite?
I’m not a Luddite by any stretch of the imagination. But I am very frugal and the end results are often the same.
The other day my ancient wifi router died and with Amazon assuring me that they could totally deliver me a new one sometime in the next 90 days I was forced to get one from Best Buy’s limited selection.
So my options were limited, my modem was also quite old, and the store was closing in an hour. I went ahead and got a combo unit. Overall I would prefer two separate devices but I’ve been on a bit of a self-isolation-induced cleaning/decluttering rampage and getting rid of some cables was appealing.
tangent: I ordered the new device from their website, drove over, and they delivered it to me in the store’s parking lot. It was neat and I’ve been continually impressed at the way a lot of businesses in the area have been innovating to remain open.
It turns out this new modem of mine has a USB port on the back. I can plug in a flash drive and set up a shared folder, like I have a tiny little bootleg filer server on my home network.
I’m sure this is old technology but I am delighted! I had no idea that this was a thing and had recently been mulling over the idea of trying to set up a Raspberry Pi server for the express purpose of sharing files locally rather than going through cloud storage.
So that’s my thrilling tale of discovery. Anyone else recently blown away to learn about something highly useful that’s been around forever?
