FIrst of all, it’s obviously still a terrible tragedy that so many inncoent people were killed on 9/11. I don’t want to ignore or downplay that. On the other hand, that’s something that we all agree on. Terrorists are bad. Al Qaeda is bad. We agree.
But what pisses me off is this… how is it that, 5 years after the greatest terrorist attack in world history, certainly the greatest directed at Americans, a moment of absolute national unity and clarity, how is it that the man who planned those attacks, who figureheads that organization, whose fate would be emblematic of the US vs. the terrorists, is still at large? And more than that, how is it that the president doesn’t seem to care? And even more than that (and here’s the REAL point), how is it that the president doesn’t seem to care about capturing the man who was responsible for 9/11, and even diverted resources AWAY from that question, and yet somehow still gets perceived as being the go-to guy who keeps us safe and is tough on terror?
Ironically, even if it were TRUE that democrats are generally pussies, they would have been far more likely to capture Bin Laden, because (a) they still would have invaded and conquered Afghanistan (I mean, that is more of a no-brainer than Terry Schiavo), and then (b) they would have been too big pussies to go after Iraq, so would have been far more likely to capture Bin Laden than Bush seems to be.
The answer is easy. Bush really cares not at all to curb terrorism. That’s the sizzle, but the steak is and always has been Iraq. Since years before 9/11, that was his goal all along.
And since George W. Bush is not Bill Clinton, he’s in no way responsible for the failings of the Clinton Administration to catch and kill bin Laden before this whole mess could even get started.
So to summarize; 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq are all Clinton’s fault.
I hope that clears the matter up for you. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to defer to the admonition by our exhaulted Vice-President, and keep your damn mouth shut, otherwise you’re complicit in “validat[ing] the strategy of the terrorists.”
Best Regards,
The Bush Apologists
*Which is a big, fat, fuckin’ lie, but who’s counting anymore.
I think you’ll find the answer you’re searching for if you read The Truth (with jokes). Halfway through it myself – started it yesterday – and it simply rocks.
I agree with the OP. If it had been known on 9/12/01 that five years later Osama would still alive and well living in Afganistan (possibly Pakistan now), Americans would have stormed the White House. I can’t understand how so many Americans have been duped by Bush.
Something tells me that they really know where he is (and has been) and I would not be shocked if somehow, just before the elections in November, we end up capturing him. Just a gut feeling.
No new building. We are still arguing about money.
No new victory tax or any other burden to pay for the war.
No draft.
No way for the Average American can contribute to victory.
No real coalition.
No real plan.
Nobody (Save one Brigadier) held accountable for any mistake.
The President is more concerned about stem cells.
The Congress is dealing with a flag-burning amendment.
The people are concerned about American Idol.
The Right is ranting about immigration.
The Left is refighting Vietnam.
This was a point I was making back in 2004. Why is Bush making the War On Terrorism such a major part of his administration when he’s doing such a bad job of it? It’s like Clinton saying he wanted to be remembered for his contributions to Family Values or Nixon saying he wanted to make Integrity in Government the standard he’d be judged by.
Even now, I don’t understand Bush’s support. The press talk about his low approval rating which hovers around 40%. To me, that is a remarkably high number.
Invading Iraq after 9/11 is like invading China after Pearl Harbor.
Bush approval rating proves that approximately 40% of people are idiots.
I don’t have a good answer to that question, except for the obvious point that an invasion of Afghanistan that is interrupted by an invasion of Iraq is far less likely to succeed than one that isn’t. Afghanistan also had the support of the international and domestic communities, and could have been a perfect place to show the Muslim world that the US could invade a country, topple its government, and not be the bad guys. Invade, build a bunch of roads and hospitals and schools, PR the fuck out of it, and leave 3 or 4 years later… prove that we are not imperialistic scum.
And even if it didn’t work, no one could claim that we didn’t have a good reason to be there.
