I’m tired of being the finest temporary administrative assistant this company has ever seen, and would like to stop working at a job and start working on a career that suits me.
I could post my resume of my applicable skills, but that would only lead you to believe I’d make a good secretary, which I do. However, this is not what I want to do with the rest of my life (or, rather, not as my primary career; finding an area of expertise which incorporates my well-honed skills would be quite acceptable).
Without going into any further detail (and there’s lots of it, as I’ve been pondering this question for about 5 years now), I’m just going to throw this out to the Teeming Millions, many of whom know me from this very message board.
What should I do with the rest of my life? What career should I pursue?
Have at it!
(See, the boards have been boring of late, and of course tomorrow is my last day of work, and I leave for vacation next Friday and won’t be able to check responses for a while, but hey, why not? Give me something to do my last day with decent internet access.)
(If you can figure out what I meant by that, please let me know; it confuses me just as much.)
Howz about theater? Admittedly, this is all based upon knowing that you played Linus once, but you seem like someone who has acting/singing in the blood. (I recommend iron supplements for that.) And you’ll be in California, and from what I hear, everyone in California is either acting in, writing, or directing something. I don’t think they let you into the state unless you can show a screenplay that you’re writing in your spare time.
Not a great job, mind you, but a good career if you can suffer being a secretary while waiting for your big break.
The best paying job I’ve ever had was a Waiter in Nashville. I got meet new people, flirt like crazy, and work as much as I liked. Although I like my new job better it is guaranteed pay and less hours.
You could come down to ATL and make mad cash waiting tables.
Oh Esprix, you know we can’t answer that question for you. (Although, my first answer is not to let everyone hold you back, and to quick get out there and go to Clown College. Then I realize its my Simpsons Addled Brain talking.)
I have no advise in the matter of carreers, but, I have no doubt with the obvious intelligence you show while contributing to the message boards, and the work ethic you must have which is shown by the raves you get from your temporary places of employment, whatever path you choose, you will excel.

Just in case, this link takes you to a perfect job reccomendation. Job

You guys suck.
Did I mention I came within a hair’s breadth of finishing my undergraduate in music education (voice major by trade)? Not what I want to do, but I have more than a modicum of musical ability, including acting (but not, alas, guitar-playing, although I do dance, and Dad could teach me how to play).
I paid my dues waitering right out of high school, and ain’t gonna do that again. Bleh!
And, oddly, I’d planned on being a UU minister as my last career, like when I’m 60. I want to be Robert Fulghum (the guy who wrote Everything I Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten).
I’ll have to ponder and post more info when I return from vacation later in August.
[silly train of thought on]I know! You could grow bricks in your backyard and sell them on the roadside for a nickel each![/silly train of thought off]
Well, what gives you joy in life? When were you the most happy being alone (remove head from gutters, please.)? What can you do for hours without noticing time has passed?
Any reason why you don’t want to finish that hair’s breadth degree? A BA would open all sorts of creative jobs for you.
Plus, you’re moving to Santa Cruz, right? UC Santa Cruz is a great liberal arts school. Go Banana Slugs!
No one can tell you what you should do, you just have to listen to what YOU are telling yourself you want to do. What do you hate most about being an AA? What do you enjoy?
I was going to suggest web page designer… then I saw your site. Scratch that idea. (Unless you have another site not listed that is much better)
Have you ever considered EXECUTIVE Administrative Asst?
Seriously though, you look like you would make an excellent female impersonator. Especially since you state you have voice/musical talent. I’m serious. I’m not gay but I love going to watch those shows. Besides, gay people are about the funnest people to hang around and their usually not uptight anal retnetives. Consider the benefits:
I hear the money is decent.
You can sleep/play/whatever all day and just work a few hours at night. (mainly you avoid the corporate grind and, yuk! traffic)
Esprix, I didn’t mean to sell you short. I’ve just never seen your list of skills, and don’t know what you’re good at. Music Education! That is so awesome. The person who had the most influence on my life was my band director. He absolutely loved us all and we loved him. I know of many people who had that kinship with their choir director as well.
If voice is your thing, I have another friend of mine who is quite the musician and we could all get together and start a group, because I fancy myself a singer as well.
Which Esprix would, of course, sing himself. Dopers would form the letters in the background. His first several shows could be based on the several thousand questions already asked on his two Gay Guy threads. We could play “Pin the Gag on Dr. Laura” and end with the “Gay Guy Dance Party” where everyone dresses in drag and dances while Esprix sings Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”
Seriously, Gay Guy, if you really like music and performing you should do something in the theater–voice coach? chorus member? Nathan Lane stand in? I bet you would be great.
