I didn’t want to derail Anaamika’s thread (which, by the way, I notice that I seem to have killed… ? :()so I’m takin’ it over to this one. A couple of comments were made there recommending (or not) various products to help smooth frizz.
Talk to me, people. My hair is mostly manageable, but the top of my head gets a corona of little fuzzy flyaways. What can I use that is a) affordable and b) won’t noticeable change the texture of my hair or make me have to wash it more often?
Currently I wash (shampoo + conditioner) about twice a week. Maybe thrice a week in the middle of summer. (I do shower every day, and sometimes twice a day. I just don’t always get my hair wet.) When it’s almost-but-not-quite dry, I usually twist it into a bun for a while, so it tends to set in nice manageable waves, and I’m perfectly happy with that.
I get the same thing, but it’s always from regrowth-- meaning that it’s not BROKEN hair that’s flying up all stupidly, but a bunch of hair that is growing back in at once. This happens to me like, twice a year.
Anyway, you can try a couple of things:
[ul]
[li]Make sure that when blow drying, you’re pointing the air flow DOWN the shaft of the hair and not up.[/li][li]Use some sort of oil-- Moroccan Oil/ Argan Oil/ whatever. Depending on your hair length, think like a dime sized bit on wet hair, then a half a drop rubbed between your hands and put on after your hair is dry,.[/li][li]Spray some hair spray (a good amount) right into your hands. Rub together. Then slide down your hair where it’s sticking up. Voila! Smooth hair.[/li][/ul]
Option 2 isn’t so good if your hair is frizzy by the roots, since too much oil can way down the roots. In fact, when I have the problem you’re describing, I make sure to only oil when my hair is wet and NOT when it’s dry. #3 is my go to trick for hair smoothing, though.
My solution to this problem was a little extreme: I cut my hair short so the frizzies are about the same length as my hair. Frequent trimming means that the new hairs get their ends cut off which I find is the cause of most of my frizz problems.
When it was longer, I would style my hair and then put one small spray of hairspray on each side of my part and smooth them down. Once it had dried, I would brush it out and they would (mostly) stay down.
Note that my hair when long is mostly straight. (Now that it is short it is curlier.)
I’ve had some luck with Aveda Smooth Infusion. I have to apply it at the precise one notch drier than damp, but definitely not yet dry moment for the best results.
I tried Garnier anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner a few months ago and was undewhelmed.
Everyone has their favourite, nothing-compares product purplehorseshoe, and this is mine.
Before I was introduced to this by my hairdresser, I had fine, fly-away hair that I couldn’t grow past shoulder-length. This shampoo, along with a hemp & argan oil product called “Hair Stronger Than Rope” has given me thicker, waist-length, shiny hair.
It has also been recommended to me to wash your hair only once every 7-10 days. That may help as well.
You could try putting mayonaise on that area a little while before you’re going to wash your hair. It acts like a deep oil treatment but washes out well.
I love the Nexxus Sleek Memory spray but it’s specifically made for use with heated tools. I love it so much, I have four bottles stacked up under my sink in case they discontinue it.
Anyway, they have this, which has great reviews and doesn’t require the use of heat.
For deep help when my hair is crunchy/frizzy, Lush’s R&B. It has a really strong coconutty smell that I’m trying to get used to, and it drenches my hair in moisture. You have to use a really small amount, and keep it away from the scalp, but it works.
Finally, for light touch-ups (which might be what you need), Pureology DryShine. It goes on after you’re done styling your hair, and it smooths down the flyaways. I use it after one of the other products (those go on wet, this goes on dry hair).
It probably is broken hair from the twist into the bun - it’s hard on your hair to do that everyday. A little mist with some hairspray and a quick handover will smooth it, but I like regular coconut oil for smoothing my hair. You don’t need much.
I have curly hair that’s prone to frizzing and breakage. Green or orange Bed Head shampoo/conditioner when I can afford it. Pink Herbal Essences when I can’t. Sebastian Potion #9 (it’s a leave-in product) is the real magic, though. Smells great, makes my hair shiny and it feels natural when it air-dries. You “can” blow dry after using it, but I don’t heat style, ever–it makes frizz worse and worse over time.
This regimen gets me some nice ringlets by the time it air dries… 3 hours later!
If you’re looking for a nice low-maintenance 'do, you can just braid your hair wet every day. Within a few months your roots will be pretty much perfectly healthy, and within a few years it’s like a whole new head of hair.
