I have some pretty bad flyaways, but I’ve always been afraid to use anything more than conditioner for several reasons. My hair is already very fine, so it looks thin pretty easily, and I’m just not very good at this “beauty, looking good” stuff! :o
So what product could I use that is not too outrageously expensive, easy to use, and won’t mat my hair down.
(And I don’t know how much of a difference this makes, but I’ll include it just in case… I’m white with dark brown hair down to below my shoulder blades)
It depends. Go to the store and read the backs of different products to see what they’re supposed to do - someplace like WalMart or Target so there’s some variety.
I like Frizz-Ease. I’ve got fine hair, but there’s LOTS of it, and it likes to curl. Because it’s fine, I go with the light formula. The “regular” and “extra strength” tend to weigh too much for my hair. This keeps my hair from going nuts, even during the humid summers here in the south.
If your hair is straight, I don’t have a lot of suggestions - I’ve never had straight hair except immediately after I leave the salon, and then only if it’s not raining.
I always reccommend The Body Shop’s coconut hair creme. It comes in a round flat tin and has the consistency of shortening. You just need a teeny tiny bit smoothed over your hair and ends. It works wonders (for me, at least)! I have wavy hair, not straight, but the creme smooths everything down and keeps it from looking frizzy on even the craziest days. I always describe it as “day 2 1/2 hair”. You know–that perfect balance between over-clean and over-greasy that seems to last roughly 1.5 seconds without artificial help. As a bonus, it smells really good without any of that chemical undertone so common in hair products.
I have really short hair and I just use the run of the mill Suave or White Rain.
What I use to tame my fine hair is Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Stick Wax.
It makes me go from flat to rock star hair. Mind you, my singing is probably better caliber than most popstar twits today. The bonus is I only have to wash my hair about once a week and just rinse it in my daily shower and finger style if I feel like it after applying more wax to my head. It is clearly the best $15 bucks I’ve risked on a product in a very long time.
