What summer movies are you looking forward to?

Even if I agreed that his recent work has suffered (and I don’t). . . I think that to say it’s because Scorcese is in “pursuit of mainstream Academy approval” couldn’t be further from the truth.

Damn. I think the guy needs medical help. That’s just all kinds of awful. Now I know why Cameron wanted to talk by phone.

Speaking of which… I’ve always admired Cameron’s pioneer like approach to filmmaking, and his passion for pure science. I love how he is always looking for new ways to immerse his audience into the worlds he’s trying to convey. Sometimes it may look like obsession (which it very well may be), but to me it seems more like he has an astounding vision that he is trying to bring to the masses with known technology. Looks like he’s close to realizing that [finger’s crossed].

I think he just needs to bathe more. It’s just the reek of old BO. It was really funny when he did the guest reviewer slot on Ebert’s show; they didn’t know what to make of him.

Inspired by this thread, I am eagerly awaiting:

“Brokeback Ocean.” A story about the love between a dolphin and a horse.

What? You mean PotC2 isn’t “Passion of the Christ II”??? I am so disappointed!!

Ha ha, not really. I am in actuality eagerly awaiting “Pirates of the Caribbean II”!! Oh, and “The DaVinci Code” should be fun, too.

Look at this this picture of Harry Knowles with John Singleton. John’s face looks like the face of a man smelling fonk!

(I can’t wait for Superman!)

We’ll have to disagree, then. I thought Gangs of New York and The Aviator, while still having flashes of brilliance, also reeked of Oscar bait. Oscar loves bloated historical epics and Scorcese has recently been only too happy to oblige.

I have to agree. Scorsese has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions when he was the clear prime contender. I’d be nice to say that his work should stand on its own without the fawning aggregate approval of an semi-literate group of people who may or may not have actually viewed all of the contenders for a particular category, but clearly Scorsese actually wants to cap his career with a tacky gold statue.

I still don’t get what he sees in Leonardo DiCaprio, though. He sure isn’t any kind of Robert DeNiro replacemenet.

Stranger

A Scanner Darkly is the big one for me. I’ve been stoked for it since way back before Charlie Kaufman wrote his script, and even before Emma-Kate Croghan was slated to direct. For, like… almost ten years, now.

If I admitted how much I have invested emotionally in this film, I would probably be vaguely ashamed of myself. It looks to be the first faithful English-language adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s work, and A Scanner Darkly is not only among the very best of his published work, but one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written – mostly because it’s only incidentally science fiction.

I was under the impression that it had wrapped and was totally in post-production, but I was downtown yesterday and stumbled across a huge shoot for it. No principals in sight, but a full block marked off, elaborate dressing, and hundreds of extras.

One of the reasons many people think it will suck is the extremely small post-production window it has - it’s being rushed way too fast, and will likely suffer for it. Having said that, what you stumbled across are reshoots - principal photography wrapped quite a while back.

The movies I’m looking forward to the most, and will see in the cinema, are:

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest
Cars
Superman Returns
Pan’s Labyrinth

And on a secondary level, at the least I’ll get the DVD:

X-Men: The Last Stand
V for Vendetta

While on a tertiary level, if buzz turns out to be good I’ll probably get around to seeing:

A Scanner Darkly
Lady in the Water
Nacho Libre

Over The Hedge

I am looking forward to “The Notorious Betty Page.” I figured it would be the usual bondage-less mainstream flick, but the fact that the Klaws are major characters and John Willie is included at all gives me hope. I’m still prepared to see a film in which Gretchen Mol posing in a bikini, or halfway in a bikini, is the major naughtiness.

I saw this and thought, “They’re making an Airplane prequel war movie?” Then I realized I was thinking of Macho Grande. :smack:

I had no idea this was in the works.

I did a bit of googling, and apparently Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry are/were in town to redo some of their scenes. I still think what I saw was a second unit shoot, but they were working here as recently as a week ago.

Anyway, with a May release date, that is a little absurdly down-to-the-wire. Holy crap.

Stephen Bainbridge recently linked to an article explaining that Hollywood is spending more money per weekend this summer than during any previous season in history. Given that fact, the summer is overloaded with major releases, and it’s guaranteed that most of them will flop.

Personally, I’m only set on seeing The Cars. For the rest, I’ll wait and see what Ebert says.
