Anyone who has been here more than six months and chooses other means of showcasing their personal problems with “the rules” is not only failing to fight ignorance, they are personifying it.

Questioning authority in all societies means we are trying to get on the grounds of fighting ignorance in our own way.

Ignorance doesn’t mean that if one asks, questions or protests a “rule” they are idiots and have no founding for a voice. Rules are rules, questioning them is not wrong, in this manner it was overblown.

One is an idiot, or ignorant if one doesn’t question what is presented if presented in the wrong light. If one mearly accepts it as face value, one may as well get out a wire cage and wire wheel to spin for hours on end. Or in the words of someone here, a hamster up Coldfires ass. Sorry, someone had to say it.

I don’t think that anyone is questioning the rules so much as how the rules are being interpreted by those who have limited power here. Oh and how those “rules” are being administered on a regular basis. This was a constant subject in a board I was a mod on. Never easy but always a challenge.

Comparing the SDMB to any other board is probably an unfair approach but keep in mind, that many of us use and are members of other boards, have our own boards or moderate on other boards. In the right scenario a member may make a booboo and a moderator will gently explain the errs in their ways. If the SDMB Mods would take a (I dare say this) human approach and put themselves in the other’s shoes, they might realize the problems that come up with how a few of them interact with people on this board, the rest are pretty level headed.

It’s one thing to belittle a person, it’s another entirely to work around it. I know this first hand, both as a moderator and as a member (on here, there, everywhere) and as an owner of two boards now.

In short, you don’t have to pull your badge out to stop what was started a gentle approach can do wonders unless the the poster is truly being an ass…Opal was not.

A simple “Just to point out this thread has been in the depths of MPSIMS before…insert link” would have been better in MHO. But I am not Coldy and I am not Opal, but the entire episode was focused on the quote of Coldy from my perspective.

It’s a small thing but when you dealing with egos, boards that share common membership and the fact that text on a monitor doesn’t give off the full intent, as a moderator Coldy could have smoothed it over before becoming threatening.

For that…I am done with this thread. I am possibly the only one that sees both sides of the story even though it seems otherwise (except possibly Opalcat) and I am not here to be a pain in the ass. But I often wonder if there were more that Coldy could do (and a couple of the other mods) in ensuring that:

1. They make it clear when they are mods talking as mods.
2. They do their best to work with and not against the members and make helpful comments before jumping on the members at large.
3. And for a couple of you – I will cite if I have to – stop using horrible language (goes to other issues than this one) when addressing your members.
   Done, outa here, going to bed. Trash my thoughts but know that I come from my own knowledge, experience and well even getting a few emails from admins/mods when I was fuckin up.

I think some very salient points are being missed here, and perhaps I’m the only person who is so drug-fucked/drunk/pissed off with the world that I am seeing this.

In the time I have been a member of these boards (and granted, by the usual criteria I am still a newbie), I have never seen a reasonable request for an explanation of moderator actions refused.

What I really hate is people invoking the “censorship” card whenever their particular query is dismissed.

I have no personal beef with you Techie, but I will most certainly pull up links to the threads from the last month alone in which yourself and Opal have chosen to question moderator/administrator actions within that thread rather than taking your concerns to the forum in which you both very well know such questions belong.

I can only hope that the SDMB community continues to treat 3F with far more respect than either of you have displayed towards this community today.

Other than that one comment, I don’t see what the big deal is. Opal and Coldfire had a disagreement, it was taken to the Pit, they both got their say.

This wasn’t, and should never have been allowed to become, a thread about which board is better.

The point has been alluded to that at Fathom the community has input into the rules and how they are applied. The fact that it works that way at Fathom , however, does not in any way obligate the SDMB to operate by the same rules. Ironically, if it did, the OP would probably have been banned hours ago.

And quite frankly, I would like to know why so many people who have problems with the application of the rules here continue to post here. If it’s such a horrible place, why are you still here? (and puleeze don’t spin me that crap about representing the silent majority).

You guys created your own dream of what a message board should be - why do you feel the need to keep coming back and telling us what’s wrong with this one? Why do you even care?
