The guy was just smug enough, just wise enough, and just inoffensive enough to keep the show on an even keel. And now they get rid of him. I read an article, God knows where, detailing a reporter’s quest to become a BTG contestant, and he intimated the presence of a new host.
:smack: Idiots.
Ah well. At least the geeks themselves haven’t been swapped out. And I don’t care WHAT you say, anybody who challenges Paul Goebel, the TV Geek, is in for some righteous smackdown. That guy scares me.
I’m afraid it’s probably true. The commercials that Comedy Central have been running show someone else holding the cards. I always kind of enjoyed J. Keith, just for his smart-aleck sendoffs for the losing contestants. “We have some lovely parting gifts offstage. Please go find them now.”
The good news is that the true Music Geek is back, and not the goofy short-haired one that kept popping up. I couldn’t stand him. And you are right: The TV Geek is Death to challengers.
And as Hastur astutely points out, the Movie Geek is the true killer – according to the Comedy Central website, he’s 55 percent on all challenges and the only geek to hit 50 percent on regular challenges.
The TV Geek is only 44 percent overall, making him actually the easiest one to beat. Of course, he has many fewer challenges (93 to the Movie Geek’s 141).
The Music Geek (long-haired version) is 49 percent overall with a paltry 74 challenges total, thanks to the morons at Comedy Central occasionally replacing him with the vastly inferior short-haired Music Geek (a.k.a. The Great Pretender).
But I have to give the best line of the first season to the TV Geek – upon being challenged, he says into his cell phone, “I’ll call you back – I gotta take somebody out.”
At least they’re not messing with the geeks too much. I’ve always enjoyed the sudden look of fear on the challengers’ faces when they realize what exactly is entailed by challenging the Movie Geek.
I heard an interview with the Long-Haired Music Geek. Apparently, the Short-Haired one was the original, but got replaced after just a few weeks of taping. The bizarre shuffling schedule they use accounts for the shows being broadcast out of order (in order to shuffle the guest Geeks around), and thus, the short-haired one keeps popping up.
Today, though, I heard an interview with the new host. They’ve finished taping the rest of the season with him. He was pretty funny, and sounds genuinely geeky. He mentionen being able to roll up a D&D character in about ten minutes, and was challenged by the host. Sure enough, you could hear him rolling polyhedrals in the background to prove it.
I just wish they’d get rid of the stupid insults that the geeks dish out after being challenged. The show would improve greatly then. And I’m sad J. Keith won’t be there anymore, he’s hot in a geeky sort of way!
I just watched an episode from the new season tonight. The new host is some weird love child of Paul Rubens and that singer from The Cars.
They diddled with the show a bit to get the geeks more involved earler. Basically after a toss up question you have a toss up with the geek for a chance to get more points.
They had a new Star Wars geek. He was pretty damn good. Although
SPOILER
He blew a challenge by having the wrong middle initial for one of the Ewoks. But he did know the first and last name.
I agree, mostly because it invites the contestants to respond with their own quips, which are often just cruel.
I saw one episode when a contestant said something like: “Oh yeah TV Geek, you fat piece of crap! You must be so fat from laying around watching TV all day and eating twinkies, fatty!” To which the TV geek responded, “Whatever, dude.”
Or they make fun of the music geek’s hair, which does look pretty bad.
In response to the OP, they can change the host, as long as they don’t get rid of the hottie who takes the medals off the geeks and holds the little TV screen for visual clues.
I watched it last night and also thought the host looked like Paul Rubens! Did you notice that they switched the positions of the TV geek and the Music geek? I wonder why.
What she said!
I caught the show last night and was really disappointed with the New Host (Don’t Know His Name, but he appears to be a near PeeWee Herman clone). I never really disliked J.Keith; there just wasn’t much to actively like! And I don’t like actively disliking. . …
The host’s name is Blaine Capatch. It rolls off the tongue like… um… no, wait, I’ll think of somethig… um… damn. Just remember, Blaine is the stool capital of the world. Stool capital. Stool. New host = stool.
And there was a question about Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in the final challenge tonight. Oh, the irony.
Jumping in a couple of weeks late just to say that geez, all of the fun of this show has just been sucked right out. The new/old/whatever music geek is just redundantly stupid, and the new host is a sarcastic, insulting whiner. Bleh.
The only high point? The movie geek just got blasted on the geek-off by a guy who racked up 19 points by saying “Halloween 1, Halloween 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…” not full titles, just the sequel numbers. The movie geek was clearly displeased, and though he did really well with his category, he wasn’t going to get anywhere near 19, so his response, as he gave up, was “Oh, screw, f*ck this!” He’s kind of cute when he’s mad! (I’m a sucker for the hair.)
