I’ve been known to indulge in immoderate outrage myself from time to time, but what with America currently running multiple gulags, and the Supreme Court having decided that American citizens can be detained indefinitely without due process as long as it’s done in a war zone, I can’t get too worked up about this little inconvenience for the first amendment.

I saw a documentary recently about the troubles The Smothers Brothers had with the censors at CBS. Not only was it scandalous back then to criticize the war, but they created a hellstorm just by booking a guest who might sing a song that was obliquely critical of the war in Vietnam. They couldn’t even show a sketch making fun of CBS’ censors. We have it a lot better now. I mean, sure, stay on the bounce, but don’t throw all your outrage behind this. Most citizens have seen free speech in worse straits, and it’s not the worst crisis in our constitutional rights at the moment.

I recently read the book “Dangerously Funny”. I commend it to anyone. Fascinating look at censorship in the USA.

Considering that Lars Vilks has been targeted for assassination and has to live under police protection just because he drew a little cartoon sketch poking fun at Muhammad, I do think the issue of freedom of artistic expression is a serious matter.
Even though legally allowed to be cowards, it really is disappointing that Comedy Central backed down so easily. ESPECIALLY since the show has made fun of just about every other group of people. Fundamentalist Christians could take from this that all they have to do to get Comedy Central to stop airing jokes about Jesus is to make a credible threat of violence.

I don’t want to see Arabs eradicated from the world. I have been around long enough to know that you have reasonable people and crazy people in any large group. I used to live near Dearborn, MI (one of the biggest Arab American communities in the US) so I know enough Arabs who are cool people. However, I encourage honest discussion of Muslim culture and its effects on human rights.

The right to be able to say anything we want about anyone else - even, no, ESPECIALLY if it’s not kind or enlightened or appropriate - is a valuable right. Unfortunately, far too many people think that the only speech that should be allowed is speech that they don’t find offensive.

Are you familiar with George Carlin? “Offensive” and “inappropriate” language can be used to make important points. While I can’t speak for the motives of this poster, I would not automatically write off anyone who talks this way. That could very well be missing the point, as it would be for anyone who assumed that George Carlin was just being a rude potty mouth with his 7 Words shtick.

My natural inclination is to be “nice” and not offend people, but when there are groups of people trying to dictate what I can and can’t say, you better believe that I am going to do everything I can to offend those fuckers.
