What to do if the Boss is hitting on you at a job you Need?

Just learn how to do the “hairy fish eye of death.”

You don’t need to say “no,” beat him up, tell him off or anything else; just give him the look that makes his dick shrivel up and screech and you’re safe to go.

From experience:

  1. Document
  2. Talk to your supervisior or their supervisor, if possible
  3. If 2 isn’t possible, doesn’t work, talk to HR.
  4. If 3 isn’t possible, doesn’t work:
    a. talk to an attorney
    b. talk to the EEOC

At each step, make it perfectly clear that you are aware of your rights and that you will take the next step if necessary. You want to avoid a lawsuit - which is a pain in the back end and is generally only profitable for the lawyers - but you want the company to assume you will sue or (and, when I went through this it was an or, not an and) smack them with an EEOC fine and complaint.

I’ve quit jobs that have veered in to uncomfortable territory. When you are working for an individual on a contract basis without the time, money or energy for a legal battle, there is really nothing else to do.

Is the situation presented in the OP strictly theoretical? I’m thinking it is. Also, Phlosphr IIRC is male?

If The Boss hit on me, he’d regret it, because I’d do him in a heart beat. Sting, too.

Seriously, I’ve only had a few guys hit on me where I didn’t invite or want it. None were in the work place. But, unless it was threatening or audaciously offensive, I can’t imagine I’d go to HR or his manager with out first communicating to him that his attention is not flattering nor is it wanted. Do this in a letter, e-mail, verbally or with a smoke signal. But do it.

Then, if he doesn’t back off, pay a visit to HR.
