What to do if you're getting improperly charged by Reservations Rewards?

I learned recently that we were getting charged $10 a month by Reservations Rewards ever since I made a purchase at staples.com back in August of last year.

What to do?

Well, from an article***** in yesterday’s NY Times yesterday, concerning this matter, I Googled on…

WLI*RESERVATIONREWARDS.CO (sic)

…and hit on a site with the company’s number: 800-732-7031.

So I called.

The gal there was very, very nice, and apologetic. I told her how I felt I was bilked and though she defended her company’s actions, she agreed to refund $40, i.e., $10 /month for 4 months.

“But you’ve been charging me $10/mo since August. That’s 9 months.”

“No. Your first month was free and you cancelled in March (actually I cancelled the card) for which we didn’t charge you, so it’s actually 6 months and we’ll pay you for that: $60”

I called my local Bank America, branch and they assured me the payment would be applied to my new card.

So that’s where it stands.
Okay, okay, I was an unalert meathead, for getting sucked in, but I still feel they scammed me (and maybe thousands of others). Nice, though that they will readily credit my account.

But I won’t forgive Staples for being a partner to this. I won’t shop there anymore - either at the store or the website.

So, if you’re getting emails from Reservation Rewards, check your credit card for possible monthly $10 charges. Then if you’re so inclined, cal the 800 number.

They might even tell you where you made the purchase that started this business. In the article cited below, the author’s husband started the ball rolling with a purchase from Fandango.

Start two threads?

Get real.

My first attempts were blocked because the site was busy. Something must have happened to cause the two posts.

With all due respect, the only thing that can happen to cause two threads is that you start two threads.

Not true, hiccups in the system can cause double posting, I believe not only of posts within threads, but threads themselves. Don’t you remember a short time back, all the blank threads? Why do you think it isn’t possible, if that is?

My main reason is that the thread title was different for the two threads, but I’m willing to be corrected.

This company is rather dubious sounding.

The fact is I repeatedly tried - unsuccessfully - to post that first OP. I know when my posts register. This one didn’t.

So I edited and tried again.

Voila. Both got published. Don’t ask me how this happens.

I’ve been buying things over the web for a decade without trouble, but I got caught by this company too. I think it was on Priceline.com. It looks like a simple rebate form but instead it signs you up for $10 a month travel club.

They are very good about wiping off the fees, though.

I wonder what % of their revenues are from people who don’t know they are paying for this?

Same thing happened to me! I signed up with Gevalia, cancelled a couple of months ago. Last week, my husband noticed a ten-dollar charge to Reservation Rewards. He started going back through the statements and, sure enough, the ten dollar charge kept showing up. I called the 800 number, entered my acct. number and got
a recorded message re: Gevalia. I was given the option of cancelling, which I did, which I thought I had already done. I guess we’ll see next month. This seems quite a few notches above shady!

I’m sure quite a few. I got stuck with it after I bought some movie tickets online. I didn’t check my statement very closely for a few months. Once I noticed it I just cancelled it. I didn’t think to try to get the money back though. I just chalked it up to being a big ol’ stupid head.

Double post aside, how is this a GQ?

I asked a Q that has a factual A

What will you and Hazle Weatherfield in the post previous to yours) lose if you at least try to get your money back by calling the 800 number? If you get a menu of numbers, use the last option.

I, too, do not see a question in your post. Are you asking what to do if you have unrecognized charges on your credit card statement? If so, you seem to have answered your own question in the OP. If not, please restate your question.

That was exactly my intent - to ask and answer - in order to inform other victimized dopers how to get their money back.

I could have used another forum but I chose not to.

At the risk of antagozing you further, that seems like a really blase attitude for someone of your Charter Member status and nearly 2500 posts to take toward the rest of us and these boards, don’t you think?

As much as I don’t want to do that, I want even less to antagonize you further.

’ Then I’ll do it for you. Moved to MPSIMS.

Except the idea of the OP isn’t mindless. You guys are sometimes so full of yourselves you lose perspective.
