What type of music does this band name imply to you?

My friend Joe and I are thinking about starting a side project. We’ve already got the name (which is the result of an in joke from a few months ago). The name is:

Sex For Coffee

Lovely, ain’t it? Anyway, we were trying to decide what sort of genre we’d be and we’ve got an idea, but I’m trying to find out what style that name evokes. A few people have said punk, some have said jazz. What do you think?

Mods, sorry if this belongs in CS, but I do believe it’s a poll.

In my opinion, bands with names like that (I saw a band called Photo By Husband) tend to be punkish indie rock.

The structure “A for B” screams Jazz to me for some reason, and the words say “edgy”.

Another vote for punkish idie rock.

Any band name with “Sex” in it immediately suggests boy bands to me. I do agree that the form of “A for B” suggests jazz, however, as does the word coffee for some reason. (Hmm…Blue Rondo a la Turkish Coffee?)

It seemed middle-aged rock, to me.

Maybe I’m 30 years ahead of everyone else

Anyway, I hate to say it, but it’s an awful name. Apologies. ‘Sex’ in a name is a sure sign that somebody’s trying too hard (NOOoo euphemisms intended dammit)

Definatley the way to find a title is for everyone to have their eyes and ears open, and pick up every phrase they come across, no matter how they hear/see it. Find one that has no particular meaning, has a catchy rhythm, check you’re not copyrighted, and you’re sorted

jazz-rock with an eccentric, quirky attitude (the same attitude I associate with They Might be Giants & Barenaked Ladies, the most misleading name ever next to Naked Lunch L)

But I think the Sex Clark Five has a GREAT name, simply because of the sheer inscrutability.

Posted after reading the OP. Did not want to be influenced by other posts.

I would imagine an edgy folk rock kind of sound. Like if Ani DiFranco were a guy.

Sex for Coffee must be punkish.

I’d say emo.

It’s spelled correctly and has no umlauts - so it can’t be metal.

Probably reason people are associating the name with jazz is due to sex->sax.

My 1st thought was house/techno.

I’d vote for an emo band or a shoegazer one.

It also sounds like the band was trying too hard for a name.
It’s just that as of late, that type of name has been WAY over done.

Sex for Coffee?

College music, definitely (like the Verve Pipe, for example).

As soon as I read “Sex For Coffee”, I thought of “Bowling For Soup”. Which means I thought of pop-punk and fun, crazy guys with lots of tattoos.

I’d vote for coffeehouse/college/emo. Somehow I notice “coffee” more than “sex,” and just have to think of the omnipresent Starbucks.

Guess that says where my addictions lie…

indie punk was my first thought

Sounds like bland, middle-of-the-road soft office-rock crap. (think Third Eye Blind, Del Amitri etc.) Sorry.

so you picked the name before writing your music? a bit backwards i’d say

sex for coffee sounds like punk-lite/poppy-alterna-rock.

you could throw them all for a loop and make it a string quartet.

Off beat rock… like Cake or Marcy Playground.
