As the title says, what cartoons did you really enjoy as a child?! I have a tonne, but didn’t really know about Saturday morning cartoons until the fall of '83; the only cartoons I knew of previous to that – and happened to be my favourite at the – time were:
The various holiday specials
Rocket Robin Hood
Hercules
Spider-Man
The Flintstones
And then in '83 I was introduced to Saturday mornings, ah the '80s when toy commercials lasted 30 minutes.
Rocky and Bullwinkle (and their friends)
George of the Jungle
Bugs Bunny/Warner Brothers
Space Angel (terrible animation (though great art), but it was science fiction)
Beanie and Cecil (the puppet show was before my time, but the animated version was great)
I remember the Huckleberry Hound Show when it was prime time. Along with Pixie & Dixie and Jinx the cat. Yogi Bear was mildly amusing, but that’s the one that survived. Go figger.
There was Mighty Mouse, but it was pretty much the same, so it got old.
The Woody Woodpecker Show was fun, especially Chilly Willy, the penguin. But there was less imagination to it.
The Disney characters never did much for me, the Mouse, Donald, Goofy, etc. Maybe because they were TOO G-rated, even for a 5-yr-old.
Rocky & Bullwinkle were funny, but they were Cold War humor and you hadda be there to appreciate it. Fractured Fairy Tales was great, though. Like the couple who were turned into frogs. “If we have to stay this way, we’ll just DIE!” Well, they didn’t die, but rest assured, every night they CROAKED!
But the ones I’ll spend money to buy are the Warner Bros Looney Tunes (Merry Melodies) cartoons. Those have adult nuances that I still find funny and I think I appreciated even as a kid. They also had common artists/writers/directors come and go with the Tom & Jerry cartoons, as well as Beany & Cecil. Which is probably why I enjoyed those, but not as much as Bugs Bunny & Co.
“Bwunhilda, you’re so beautiful.”
“Yes, I know, I can’t help it.”
And thankfully I’ve got the Inky the Caveman episodes. Priceless, along with the fabulous Mendelssohn arrangement.
Bugs Bunny, of course
Ditto on the Jay Ward stuff… My last name is Boris, so you can imiagine the Natasha jokes. #1 has to be…Speed Racer. I recently received the DVD, a model Mach 5, a Speed action figure (which is posable in the “jumping out of the car” pose).
While not a cartoon, I have to throw in Ultra-man.
I salute you! The most memorable cartoon experience in my life and I had to have been no older than 10 when I saw it in the theater. Inki and the Minah Bird and others nearby.
I liked a lot of the action hero cartoons, like He-Man, She-ra, Batman, Sailor Moon (in the name of the moon, I will punish you!), etc. Does anyone remember the 80’s cartoon Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea? It was so atmospheric and mysterious, my mother actually enjoyed watching it too.
Bugs Bunny
The entire Rocky and Bullwinkle cast. Never saw George as a kid for some reason.
Crusader Rabbit.
Farmer Gray. This was a set of silent cartoons on in the very early morning, right after Modern Farmer and before my parents woke up. They are probably awful but I remember them fondly.
I watched the whole set of Hanna Barbera cartoons but I can’t say I loved them.
And Gerald McBoing Boing.
