Of all the possible subjects to touch upon in this universe of ours, mine went as follows:
I’ve heard it said that eating red licorice can kill you… Is there any truth to that?
(or words to that effect)
Needless to say it died a quick, merciful death.
How about you?
My very first thread here was this one . In the Pit, three responses.
I got better.
My first thread was where I asked the musicians on the SDMB what they were working on - the responses were cool and varied and the community made me feel extremely welcome.

I asked if St. Ludicrous was an actual Saint whose day is near April 1st. Turns out he exists, but hes from Iowa so…
A perfect general question .
Post 1: Question.
Post 2: Answer.
Post 3: Thanks.
Thread done.
I can’t remember what the actual thread was called but it was asking about ‘What did you want to be when you grow up?..and did you follow that dream?’.
It was very successful, and went on for about 4 pages.
Pretty successful–What might you be dead of now, were it not for the advances of modern (i.e., 20th-century) medical science? 3 pages, 2500 views. Not bad for first time out. Subsequent threads haven’t all been met with the same success, but hey; you win some, you lose some.
I MPSIMEd my cat . Moderate interest. Most of my threads die pretty quick deaths. I think I’ve had two reach two pages, and one with no responses at all.
Mine was, too. I asked what happened to the 7-Up space ticket , and I got an answer.

Could one of the replies have been along the lines of… ‘eating (too much) red licorice’, by any chance?
My question was about a Midwestern culinary curiosity, the Manhattan sandwich, as in “Why is it called that?”
I’m STILL trying to find the answer!
My first thread was a comment on this Staff Report: What does “Kyrie Eleison” mean?
I pointed out that the Kyrie is not restricted to the Roman Catholic liturgy but is also used in Anglican and Orthodox liturgy. Generated several responses, from Songbird (the author of the report), Polycarp , and others.
However, it seems to have disappeared in one of the many upgrades over the past ten years.
A question on GMT and if it changed in the summertime . Asked and answered in 12 replies.
Had lots more success with my second one on EURO 2008 … that got 163 replies and 2800 looks.

Here ’s the first thread I started; this was my first post.
Mine was in 2000 and it was about Heavy Metal. Specifically, I asked why heavy metal music is called that.
I don’t think I really got an adequate answer at the time, either.
Actually, I posted on the AOL boards back from '97-2000, but I have no idea what I posted about.
Mine is current, just started yesterday. The jury is still out.
It was on the old AOL boards, and it was about the whole “liquor before beer, you’re in the clear; beer before liquor, never been sicker” rhyme.
I was in college, what else can I say?
Mine was this thread . I didn’t think it would be groundbreaking, but I thought it was pretty cool.
Zero replies.
But I still maintain it is cool, in the face of deafening silence.
