As I’ve said, I don’t think most English speakers regard “fuck off and die” to be a literal wish of death. But given that I’d just been mod-noted, I should have steered clear of mortality-related insults.
Overall, though, I think rudeness and name-calling are one of the two ways (ignoring them being the other) to deal with trolls. I’m not going to try to engage him in rational discussion, and I’m certainly not going to waste my time or energy coming up with some clever, amusing insult. And I feel my record here shows that I don’t put people on the “reply with profanity only” list lightly, but reserve it only for truly irredeemable shitbags.

Yes, it all makes sense, now. At first, I had read Chronos’ post, then read a different thread, then came back and saw your post and Beck’s response. Since I didn’t scroll up again, I just assumed Beck was responding to the post directly above hers, which is generally my default assumption.
It’s why I try to always quote the relevant bit when responding to a post.
