What were you THINKING?

That. Was funny. I tip my hat to you.

Off topic.

I’m not sure why you’d think that when @SuntanLotion did not quote anyone and @crowmanyclouds hadn’t said anything outrageous or attention seeking.

Unlike Beck saying that the word “nigger” is just a part of the culture where she lives and no one really cares about it.

Ask her, if I’m wrong I will apologize, but I think it is clear she wasn’t talking about Beck.

Lotta folks live insular low-variety lives. Then they find this place and they’re talking to people from all over the world and every corner of this country. Rich, poor, left, right, PhDs and dropouts, rural, urban, etc.

And they’re mightily confused when the same line everyone understands down at the only diner in town elicits very different reactions from the audience here. So they try to defend the indefensible.

I got schooled by a mod a couple days ago. I grew up and have lived in a relatively low-racist subculture. I learned just how creative the hardcore racists are at turning every slang phrase into a slur. Who knew? Not I.

@SuntanLotion, please learn how to reply to people in a way that makes it clear who you’re relying to. Discourse doesn’t make it easy. If you only hit “reply”, as often as not Discourse removes the quote and any indication that shows who you’re relying to.

See how I selected a portion of your post to reply to? As long as you include some, but not all, of the original post, it’ll show up. If you include all of it, it’ll disappear.

Just highlight some relevant part of the original post and then hit the floating “Quote” button.

Hell, just @Whoever for who you’re replying to.

I frequently start replying to the most recent post but by the time I finish typing 3 people have snuck in.

So I edit in an additional paragraph up top like;

ETA: @Whoever three posts above here.

BOTTOM LINE:
The context in your head is in nobody else’s head until you put it there using your words.

This is the money quote: do this every post. We are not mind readers.

Lots of us will thanks lots of you if you do.

Speak for yourself, if you please.

Thanks,
bobot

Can bobot read minds?

@discobot fortune

:crystal_ball: Signs point to yes

Respectfully noted.

The rest of you, damn it! give us a couple words so we know what/where/when the post is about and especially who is being replied to.

No point, enough other posters have made it clear they don’t consider her one that such a thread won’t have enough effect.

Pretty sure you can also add to the quote and it will show up. Add an extra space at the end, say.

Testing…

ETA: yep!

You can also at someone to make clear who you are replying to if you don’t want to quote, @solost.

ETA: or, if it’s only after posting that you realize it’s unclear, throw down an @ in the ETA @solost.

Or, for the more old fashioned, an re: solost

Yes, I know, and @LSLGuy had pointed it out a few posts before mine. I do ‘@’ dopers from time to time, but I usually prefer quoting, since it not only alerts the poster I’m quoting, it provides clear context as to what I’m responding to.

@solost
Thank you

Good job! :+1:

What if I’m replying to someone who starts their post with, “Don’t quote me on this…”
