What were you THINKING?

There’s another British show called “Escape to the Country,” which is a bit more like House Hunters in that it’s couples buying a house, accompanied by sweeping views of rural British landscapes. Many episodes on YouTube.

I guess it merits mention again. 10 months after these posts and doing…precisely the same tired routine on the same related topics yet again. Not exactly sealioning but certainly sealion-adjacent

goo-goo g’joob

A thread in MPSIMS describes a bizarre sexual assault on a tourist by a priest in Greece. Most of the responses to the OP are people either making fun of the sexual assault, or saying that the victim wanted it (despite going to the police to report it).

Fuckin gross, y’all.

You’re skipping an important point: it’s a thread by a “new” poster. Classic troll behavior and should be mentioned in our Troll thread.

Yeah, when that post showed up, my first thought was, “is this a trock? That’s an unusual first post for a new-to-you message board.” But the actual post seemed okay, so i decided to just keep an eye on the poster.

It’s the replies that were gross.

Yes, but that’s often the point of a troll, to inspire “bad” responses.

Exactly. That’s what trolls do; they try to be evocative and provoke certain behaviors out of people, and don’t always need to be inappropriate in doing so.

Imagine every time a friend of yours hears the name “Donald Trump” they immediately go into a rage and start ranting like a maniac. You attend a party with that friend. The party is boring so you casually mention that you saw Trump announce a new cabinet pick; a truthful bit of information and a totally normal thing to bring up in most contexts. But you do it just to see your friend go berserk so you can stand back and watch the fireworks.

That’s high level trolling behavior. A good troll knows how to do it while seeming totally innocent.

This “troll” (I’ll withhold judgement on that) didn’t force a bunch of pricks to make stupid, disgusting troglodyte jokes about a sexual assault victim. That’s entirely on all of those posters, not that OP.

And that’s leaving aside bump, with the “he was totally into it at the time” motherfuckery.

I’ll point out that “troll” in this context goes back to the term in fishing, where the fisher trolls a bait that the fish find irresistible and they must strike without being able to refuse their impulses.

So perfectly in character, and actually one of the better-executed trolls here.

This is undeniably true, and also highlights an unfortunate and uniquely American fact that doesn’t apply in more sane countries, where there are often legitimate choices between conservative vs liberal leadership. The current two-party system in America gives you a choice between conservatism and malignant idiocracy.

Is that spelled “troll” or “trawl”? I know the latter is a pretty common word in fishing but I don’t know if “trawl” applies in your exact context or if the word really is “troll.”

Thanks, that’s perfect!

And now the thread’s been locked because of the gross comments.

You wanna know why more men don’t come forward when they’ve been sexually assaulted? Because of this kind of reaction where we’ve apparently decided that rape is funny when the victim is male, or proves that they weren’t enough of a “real man” to stop it, or that they deserved it for not fighting back.

See also the vast panopoly of “hur dur don’t drop the soap” comments that happen whenever a disliked person gets a prison sentence. I’ve never experienced any kind of sexual assault myself, but if I had I’d hesitate to talk about it if this was the kind of reaction I expected.

All of this is why rape jokes get modded.

I am no mod but it seemed like that thread, at best, was skirting the line. (And of course the OP of the thread came right out and blatantly defended rape, which was just shooting past the line in a race car.)

And now the thread, and its perpetrator, are cornfielded. So, what they were thinking was undoubtedly “hurrr, durrr, I troll u”.

I won’t go into what the willing participants were thinking.

People aren’t fish, and you can fuck off with your rape culture-lite defense of all those “Tee Hee Buttseks” chucklefucks who have actual human agency.

I don’t think I was defending anything.

Not even tour poor reading comprehension.

My only post in that thread was reminding people that sexual assault is bad, m’kay, and blaming the victim for being susceptible to the power imbalance that enables it is also bad.
