I’m going to be contrarian and say that I appreciated the idea behind the joke in the headline and Lord knows this board has endorsed snark on the subject of many people’s deaths before.
Now stop making me defend BB. Also, I didn’t actually read beyond the headline.
Casual racism by Lumpy in https://boards.straightdope.com/t/tell-us-an-interesting-random-fact-you-stumbled-across-part-2/1004785/1432
Not sure if that can be moderated.
Yeah, I noticed it too. It’s one of the regular turds Lumpy uses to dump in threads. I can’t tell if he is a genuine asshole/racist/racist asshole or just trolling, but does it make a difference?
Yes, I think you’re right, he belongs in the troll thread or even deserves his own pit thread, but it would be hard to find many of his trolling posts because they are so casual.
Not exactly that I could find. But there are 4 pit threads with his name in the title. (One of which is not about our poster but rather an off-board character nicknamed “lumpy” but is still an entertaining read). The earliest is from 1999. The dude’s got staying power.
The various complaints about the venerable DrDeth are legion. But one persistent complaint is that he doesn’t read his own cites and they often are quite at odds with what he claims they say. Which habit of his makes the following event really funny. Sad, but much more funny than sad IMO.
Over in Café Society there is a current thread where someone is seeking an alternative to The New Yorker magazine. Largely because it’s getting too expensive for their tight budget. Along about post #38DrDeth pipes up that he found a 20-month digital + print subscription for $60. So pretty darn cheap. A disbeliever asks for a cite to this really excellent deal.
So our intrepid hero posts his cite. To the subscription page for New York magazine. Missed it by that much.
Admittedly, he’s from the US west, not from NYC. But The New Yorker magazine is a pretty famous, nay iconic, national publication and has been for our entire lives.
I had to laugh. I refrained from gloat-posting there. So I could do it here.
I just checked. Print plus digital for the real The New Yorker is $78/yr the first year and $169 for each subsequent year. That’s a 2.16 multiplier. Or a 54% discounted loss-leader teaser depending on your POV.
We have a whole thread about the good Doctor, but I’ll just throw this in here. There are two things to remember when debating this physician of oblivion:
He is always right, you are always wrong.
He will cheerfully jump into a thread long after some particular conversation is over to remind you of Point #1, even when the facts say otherwise.
The magazine industry is funny in that they advertise a “suggested retail” full price that you’ll pay if you subscribe directly from them. And they’ll be happy to take your money if you do.
But if you subscribe through any number of historical “subscription houses”, the discount to the full price is half or more.
Small correction. We have six whole threads on him. Some quite old, but all amounting to the same complaints about the same schticks. 5 of which are minor (<100 posts each) and then the 2200-post magnum opus de crappus.
I teed one up in a thread game earlier this week: 4 word story, I put in “In A Gadda Da” fully expecting something silly to complete the title. Like “Tarantulas”, “Haggis”, or “Earworms”…
He completely missed that the title was unfinished and just obliviously went off on an unrelated tangent.
