What were you THINKING?

And now we see evidence of some contrition. Color me more bemused than confused. And, ref @ASL_v2.0, rapidly losing interest. C’est la guerre.

OTOH, on the positive side your response to her caused me to remember this phrase, which I have probably not seen in more than ten years. So thank you for that. I’d normally use “c’est la vie” in my really bad French accent.

But your phrasing is so much better, thank you.

Much of life is better thought of in terms of warfare than Karma. Especially the part involving your fellow humans.

In other news, 3 hours ago, the subject thread has been closed by the mods with no explanation. The poster’s status is showing “SUSENDED”.

As yet no ATMB thread speaking to why nor to the OP’s future here.

She never posted here enough to merit an ATMB thread.
She didn’t choose to work with the staff to merge her 2 accounts and she requested her thread and/or account be deleted. So best practice at this point was to suspend her until further notice.

She easily fell into more bother than their worth category while I’m at it.

Thank you for the explanation. Case closed as it were.

I just went spelunking into her history under her original username. Lots of male-female drama there. The sort of polarizing stuff that might have played well around here in 2005, but that is a minefield for everyone of every gender here in our current Doper zeitgeist.

A wise decision IMO.

So what.
We lovely and beautiful.
Eat yer heart out you not-so-pleasant Dopers.

I’m glad we now have relative equality in our level of tolerance for dumb gender bullshit.

The poster terentii in the “Can somebody explain Oprah Winfrey to non US-Americans?” thread says:

If Colbert was “thrilled” to see her, that’s pure celebrity brown-nosing. She’s one of those people who are famous for being famous. She got rich by pandering to the lowest common denominator with her feel-good-about-yourself bullshit.

The woman is a menace.

terentii #43
It helps that she’s an overweight woman of color. Three oppressed minorities rolled into one kinda tugs at the hearts of some people.

And when asked for clarification about “feel-good-about-yourself bullshit”, replied:

I’m sure many people enjoy being delusional.

That is some nasty stuff.

Jeez, that is pretty gross.

I’ve got some issues with Oprah, and I am strongly against some of the things she did. But I’m quite confident she got famous because she’s a badass businesswoman (and lucky too, obviously.) If you look at her career, she made a lot of good choices for her bottom line. She succeeded not because she was a heavy Black woman, but in spite of those things, despite all the bigotry of people like terentii.

Also, the people she pandered to in the 90s were middle class white women. I used to watch that show every day after school and it was definitely a feel good show, but there was so much more objectionable out there at the time. When I think lowest common denominator, I think Springer.

Oprah is an amazing success story and should be an inspiration to everyone. She really is a self-made person who came from nothing.

She’s not perfect but nobody is.

She’s a major threat to racists and misogynists, probably terrifies them, because if she can do it, who knows who else might?! So the hatred is understandable. And absolutely disgusting.

terentii is no stranger to misogynistic and/or bigoted posts. He’s pretty much the textbook definition of “gross, lecherous old white man.”

Yeah, I looked him up, I couldn’t remember the name but I saw the avatar and was immediately reminded of some, uh, questionable opinions in the past.

Wow. Based on what you guys are saying, I’m glad I didn’t click into that thread. Got enough things raising my blood pressure these days.

@smapti, I’m calling you out for your last… 24 hours or so in the Israel-Hamas thread. Seriously, WTF, man? How are you sporting an anti-fascist avatar (re: your mask) on the one hand, and yet totally chill with arguing for a “might makes right” philosophy whereby the Geneva conventions and world opinion on war crimes and humanitarian law don’t count for shit because “they’ve got no divisions” (paraphrase).

You are straight up arguing out of the fascist playbook.

The Israelis aren’t the fascists in that conflict.

Leaving aside the question of whether Netanyahu’s increasingly conservative, nationalistic, militaristic government that is currently engaged in bombing hospitals is fascist… You’re the one I’m accusing of arguing like a fascist. You’re the one I’m calling out.

It can’t be left behind, because it’s the crux of the matter. Israel is a multicultural, multi-ethnic liberal democracy that respects freedom of religion and speech and self-determination, derives its power from the consent of the governed, and uses that power to embetter the lives thereof.

Hamas is an unelected dictatorial theocratic ethnostate that executes people for not strictly adhering to the officially prescribed religion, treats its citizens as cannon fodder, and wants to externinate the Jews.

It is permissible for the forces of good to use whatever means are necessary to defeat evil.

So, you’d be okay with just dropping a nuke on Gaza and calling it a day?

No, that would be going much too far.

Never thought I’d be seeing an argument in favor of Manifest Destiny in 2023 but here we are. And why not? “They’re bad and we’re good so it’s fine for us to wipe them out and take everything they have” has been a justification for war for all of human history. Heck, it’s straight up Biblical.
