Yes, @What_Exit made a similar point, and my apologies if throwing gasoline on the fire was what I unintentionally did. Ironically, it was mostly a problem of timing, wherein I did not want to get involved at first and stewed over it for a time before finally losing my cool. I should have either said something right away or just let it be.
If there was any kind of motivation behind my post it was probably the fact that I think it’s unfair for Beck to be so disparaged that she’s driven off this board that she considers to be a sort of virtual home. Her little posts about life in rural Arkansas remind me of the collection of stories by the creative but troubled writer Shirley Jackson, Life Among the Savages, about the peculiar goings-on in her family life. So her values are “old-fashioned”? Fine. Disagree with them. That’s the nature of this board, and of the world we live in. But don’t eviscerate her.
It’s just dumb word play. Brown Bear <> “Brown” Bear. And Red Fox <> “Red” Fox.
But the widespread existence of the actual misconception is far more notable than the hilarity of the “joke”.
For those who don’t get why the bear thread was annoying, it’s been a pattern for the last few months (and maybe longer, although I only started noticing it this year). I did a quick search for her posts in FQ this year, and easily 3/4 of them are jokes or personal stories that contribute nothing. None of them rise to the level where I’d report it, but it gets tedious after a while.

Again, she’s a fine poster and I’m glad she’s here. But I’m not a fan of this behavior.
Well, shitting in FQ is frowned upon by a lot of posters, myself included. That is half the complaints she got in this thread. With any luck this was a successful intervention to get her to pay more attention where she’s posting.
The rest is well hashed out and hopefully will now be done by tomorrow.
And as a sidebar, that’s reciprocated. I think maybe we’ve butted heads more often than usual recently, including in the movie misogyny thread where LHoD rather wisely brought matters to a close with an observation that he didn’t know what the hell we were still arguing about. You sort of fall into the category of posters where I feel we’ve known each other long enough that if we occasionally butt heads it’s not a big deal and we’ll shrug it off. But I think I may have misdirected my annoyance in that thread, for which I apologize.
Probably there is some agreement on a few things:
She may be a nice enough person (no idea) and she is a person with real health challenges who uses this board as a major source of social connection.
Her posting style outside of MPSIMS irritates many. Some to strong Pit levels.
Most would rather she be able to stay posting even outside MPSIMS if she could only not rinse repeat various crap.
I’ve no idea on the brown bear brown bear bit but it seems reporting her and her getting gentle mod guidance, not warnings, might help her and the rest of us?
I think a warning for trolling would get the point across more effectively. Whatever other qualities this poster may have, an ability to hear and understand gentle criticism is not one of them.

I can certainly see that if half the population were shamed (sorry, perhaps “encouraged”?) into refraining from careless promiscuity that there would be myriad public health benefits. So which half did you have in mind, octopus? Surnames A through M? Even just surnames N through P would probably help?

Hey, thanks. I appreciate that. And I stayed in that conversation longer than I should have. I was, after all, a thread about a movie I haven’t seen in a genre (horror) I rarely watch.
Oh god, timing is the bane of all of us. Killer joke, and you screw the timing. WAH-Wah-wah. Sympathy that comes too early - you’re a misery lover. Too late - you’re just being pro-forma. It is always an issue, especially with emotionally chargeed moments.
And this is my hope as well. I do think Beck should be more careful about where she posts, but I also (and even a large number of the angry posters seem to agree) don’t want her gone from this place.

Ahh yes, the usual complaint about bannings ‘But they contributed so much to Cafe threads! Can’t we just let their bigotry slide this time like we did all the times before?’.
I have not heard anyone call for her banning. Most seem to prefer she remains but either participate in non-MPSIMS fora in a less irritating or offensive way, or stay in MPSIMS.
I read that as a not wanting to drive her out.
And hard to classify her opinions regarding pornography as “bigotry”. I was under the impression that the problem was less the offensiveness of her opinions on that matter than the offensiveness of how they were expressed?
Umm, I wasn’t talking about Beck, I was talking about the continuing trend of folks only being aware of posters through fora where they’re on their best behavior.
