I’m rather peeved at the latest sneer / screed from The_Librarian in the Musk Xitter thread bitching about posters in the (mostly Tesla) self-driving cars thread. About which I’m bitching here in the what were they THINKING thread, so triple-indirection.
In a nutshell, she hates America, Americans, capitalism, automobiles, and a few other things unworthy of mention, and rarely misses a chance to drop her twee little hostility grenades into a relevant thread that comes to her attention.
We get it; you’re a Euro green, stop the economy, shrink the human population, and make the world safe for puppies and kitties person. Which is an admirable goal once we get about 95% of humanity on board cuz it only takes about 5% with contrary wishes to utterly screw you into the ground. Meanwhile, we got work to do keeping the lights on and the barbarians at bay.
The esteemed wolly is back, asking us to fix his life problems so that he can stay home and look at the internet all day. That’s my interpretation, anyway. If it were not for the previous threads, I might have popped in with a suggestion or two, but I am not interesting in engaging with them based on past performance.
“Staying home and looking at the internet” describes my retirement so far (not including walking the dog). It’s actually pretty nice, after 4+ decades of working 60+ hours a week. But I had to fix my own problems first.
I was peeved that a useful discussion about the state of art in self driving vehicles has devolved into a Tesla fanboy thread. Dosens of posts comparing fw v0,8 to fw v0.81.
Btw you are the second fanboy coming out of the woodwork to complain about being called a fanboy.
I heard about that sort of situation a lot from my former patients, all of whom were forced Big House bound, regulated, watched over inmates without internet.
But I do truly sympathize with you. I do have many other options, I just don’t choose them real often right now.
Post Friendly’s I hard two part time jobs and a full course load. That was brutal, too brutal but the jobs were way better. Delivering Drugs (for a Pharmacy) and a Math Tutor in the Math Lab at College.
But that was far too much and I ended up joining the Navy after failing most of my classes.
We have a poster here whose handle escapes me at the moment, but he’s in New Zealand and used to run a catering business. He wrote at least one long post once about the rigours of that business and why he eventually had to get out. There are also lots of stories and shows about the challenges of working in restaurant kitchens, which sounds like an ordeal I’d never want to face.
But I would question – only partly in jest – whether McDonald’s is even in the food service business, since their products aren’t actually food and they don’t really have much in the way of service. It’s a place for high school kids to make minimum wage flipping greasy patties mostly for other high schoolers – and actually, I don’t think they even flip them any more, they have machines that sear both sides at once.
For the record, Tony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential has a ton of that (dated of course), and it absolutely read as a young man’s job, when you’re full of confidence, energy, and it the case of Tony’s self-reporting, drugs. And these days it must be much more competitive/stressful in part due to the proliferation of cooking shows and celebrity chefs that make it look more successful than it is for most hopefuls. It’s a great, snarky book, although I got my copy after years of being a fan of his shows.
Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit, but my local place – way on the fringes of suburbia – definitely has a lot of young’uns working there, and often gets infested by high schoolers at lunchtime and after school.
Yeah, I read that book, and it was among those anecdotes that came to mind. Not a job I’d ever want to have! There’s also the British TV comedy series Chef! and, on a more serious note, the movie Burnt, and many others.
Believe it or not I strive to be some of those things too. But hobby-horsing in threads where your position is only tangential to the topic gets real old real quick.
I do not own a Tesla. I have never driven a Tesla. Musk is a drug-addled fool and probably one of the top 5 most dangerous people to humanity after Trump, Putin, Xi, and Kim. If he’s not number 5 he’s absolutely in the top ten. I have legions of comments in the Musk pit thread to verify these contentions here.
The fact you a labeled me a fanboy demonstrates how little you read for comprehension in that thread and how much you read for outrage triggers.
You are in fact a smart and thoughtful person. Your patience is evidently worn thin by all the evil in the world, and the pitiful pace at which we’re cleaning it up. Believe me when I say about 40% of America feels the same way. And probably 80% of the American Dopers.
It looks like every few months something reminds them that they’re unhappy and they come looking for a fix. If they’re sincere (I don’t feel confident in evaluating them either way based on their very limited interactions after post such threads) I absolutely thing they’d benefit more from career and personal counseling in person rather than a bunch of internet strangers.
But I’m… hesitant. They have all of 3 hours read time, despite joining 11AUG2018. They’ve viewed a whole 18 topics and barely respond. That doesn’t feel like someone actually looking for help. And asking for the help here (since their first post was literally “I don’t know what I want to do with my life” around their join date) again means they’ve been looking for help in one form or another for nearly 6 years without change as @John_DiFool pointed out.
