How about the Spitballs? That would be fun, certainly better than some drab military thing. The Offsides - cheeky, rebellious. The Hellmets. The Dazzlers. The FBI (football invasion). The Drummers. The Kowalskis - who wouldn’t love it if they chose that one?
The Toughies. The Razors. The Link Wrays (he was local, sort of). The Rumblers! The Handouts - wait, that’s terrible. So, what about a name that’s just initials - The J.J.s - so what if it doesn’t stand for anything - the merch could be awesome! Who wouldn’t be intimidated by some bruiser-boy coming down the sidewalk in a sweat with a big “J.J.” on it? Your mom, that’s who.
Did someone suggest the Washington Machines? I like that one.
As long as it’s the Machines, not “The Machine”. Sports teams need to be plural nouns. I will brook no disagreement on this. What are we, hippies?

So long as you use a plural verb with a plural noun and a singular verb with a singular noun. None of this “Washington are …” nonsense.
