Canada had 919 covid deaths per million. The US had 2750 deaths per million. This is a difference of 1830 deaths per million. This is over 600,000 excess deaths in the US. Thanks to the difference in health care policies due to the idiocy of Trump.
I don’t disagree with your details at all. I had been involved with personal computers since the original Apple (some fruit company…) was introduced and I was doing on-line chat boards way before IBM released its PC architecture so everyone could clone it or build software to run on it. And my best friend’s father was worked in the Navy on the seeds of ARPAnet so he got us access to all sorts of weird (at the time) stuff. And just before Clinton signed that order that undermined their business I just happened to leave a company that made GPS units for installation on Navy ships, using technology standards that werent available to the general public.
I realize Clinton didn’t invent any of that stuff# and, in fact, the concepts and dreams were in motion long before he was playing in politics. My overall point, though, is that a POTUS can block or hinder efforts in motion and he can suggest and initiate other ideas which have far-reaching impacts. That was an argument against the idea that the POTUS is irrelevant compared to local politics. It’s all important at different levels for different reasons. We each must simply choose our battles carefully.
And, to be quite honest, my original provision of that answer was a failed attempt to be rudely humorous. I apologize because my weird sense of humor doesn’t always come through, particularly in text.
But Anny_M is correct: if Those Who Wield Power can convince the public it’s necessary, internment or concentration or whatever-euphemism-you-like removal-from-the-rest-of-us locations will spring up (fully funded, staffed, and supplied) faster than you’ve seen any homeless or migrant-worker campground cleared. [Yes, that was another feeble attempt at facetious humor.]
At the beginning of this century things got pretty questionable for Muslims and anybody with an Islamic- or Arabic- or Persian-sounding name#. And in the beginning of his administration, Donny tried rounding them all up to imprison them and tried to get those categories of surnames blocked from entering the United States.
Ironically, the most vocal group speaking against those measures were survivors of the WWII internment camps. They went to the press and joined other groups who were getting itchy about Donny’s idea, and it mostly went away. If he gets the chance, he will try again in 2025.

In two separate incidents, I heard that Mohammad Ali Yusuf was removed from an airline. I don’t recall whether that was two incidents or two separate news reportings. In any case, the American singer Cat Stevens still had to prove he was a loyal U.S. Citizen.
There’s also the Atlantic Ocean, so you could look at Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Or, for real adventure, try Tuktoyaktuk, on the Arctic Ocean. Canada: Three coasts on three oceans.
Remember, as a Canadian citizen, you can go anywhere in Canada you want to. You don’t need to go where your relatives are.
A tiny nitpick: if you are a man, you say “obrigado”, if you are a woman you say “obrigada”
Basic level Portuguese is easy, though while I did try to use it, people just spoke English to me, so I did not learn much more than a few numbers, a few phrases and how to order a beer.
As for what I will do if Trump wins? I will read the SDMB for my news on his inane and destructive actions. Fortunately I do not live in the USA.
Buy a red ball cap. Probably a FlexFit 7¾. Put “MAGA” on it…except “creatively” substitute one letter for another, or something like that.
Eat a lot of acid and enjoy the show.
Maybe get my first and only tattoo of someone or something on my ass.
Write an angry letter to the editor of some local rag.
Actually, seriously consider restructuring some of my “fun money” portion of retirement investments…four years of dumbass foreign trade and domestic economic policies?
Get my teeth cleaned thrice, and use my insurance to buy the allotted two pairs of eyeglasses. Probably get a haircut.
Probably get some of that orange spray as a joke and use it on myself, just for fun.
Go muddin’ and get me some of those cool LED headlights, and put up a bigass American flag on my car, and probably put on a bumper sticker that has the text of “these colors don’t run” with some kind of image. To blend in.
Gain sixty pounds and get that leg-shortening surgery. Have a few inches removed from each finger, and investigate penis reduction surgery. “Medical” procedures to be performed in North Korea or Russia. Find out Dick Van Patten’s secret to a successful combover. As tribute and homage.
Carry a bullwhip attached to my belt at all times.
Continue to make fun of the Proud Boys Choir, or whatever.
In other words, how the hell should I know? Probably see half of all people I meet as dangerous cretins whose presence is a threat.
Comparing Canada and the US to each other isn’t apples to apples. Canadians have a different culture that Americans, and it’s citizens are much more spread out physically which helped contain the spread of Covid.
And the above poster attributed all Covid deaths to Trump - which is silly, love him or hate him.
I expected this response, because its all you’ve got. Yes, we have a different culture - one of actually electing competent leadership and listening to medical experts.
Trump’s lack of leadership and open hatred of medical experts is what caused the difference in death rates. And yes, the culture of listening to autocratic morons contributed to this.
And no, Canadians actually live in large urban centers - they are not spread out evenly across the country. Canada has 81.6 of the population in urban areas. The US has 82.7%
You are entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.
In the early days of COVID, when NYC was using truck trailers as temporary morgues, and mor in Italy could not keep up with the body count, Trump said that, with his vast medical expertise and respect for science, said that it would be gone by Easter, which was only a few weeks away; he had numerous rallies without any masking requirements; he suggested ingesting bleach and shoving a light up one’s ass (or something similar), while most other world leaders (with the exception of Boris Johnson) were busy taking it seriously.
We’re not, btw, and you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Most of us live in towns and cities; we just don’t have as many towns and cities as you have.
You still, however, didn’t answer my original question to you:
