Thursday evening bump. Come join us everyone.

Results from the Thursday tourney:

9: Dag
8: Mrs. Crane
7: Yeti
6: Mensa
5: Frosted Glass
4: Ast
3: Missy
2: Mental Guy
1: Me

Very long, very tense heads up finale, in which I got way more than my share of cards. I’m sure the overall results will be up soon.

See you all next Thursday.

First televised Illini game of the season tonight, and I’ve seen what happens when I try to multitask…

I thought Missy might break through tonight, and third is a step up. A huge jump for Gray, and Frosty becomes standings-eligible with his third tourney.

All of which is secondary as MG continues his slaughter of this quarter:

1 MentalGuy 84.3
2 Gray Ghost 72.5
3 Dag Otto 65.7
4 Frosted Glass 59.9
5 MissTake 53.7

Anybody got a bad beat story that we can laugh at?

Pretty sure Ghost got me on a river straight…but I didn’t take notes…I just cried like a little bitch instead.

Apologies if already answered:

  • How long do these typically run to heads-up?
  • I don’t AIM. Would you strongly prefer I AIM?

Thanks!

The Thursday tournaments start at 9:05 Central and typically go roughly 1 hour. Sometimes as long as 1 hour 15 minutes. Maybe we’ve gone past 10:30, once? Twice?

The vast majority of the chat is conducted over AIM. It’s not obligatory to chat; not like we collude, or even kibbutz that much about the play. Usually it’s just a way to visit and share different stuff about our week. I only break out AIM when I’m playing with this group.

Yeti, I’m not sure if I knocked you out, or how I did it. I have a so-so memory for how the hands played out, one reason I’m so irritated about Stars yanking our hand histories. I think I had an open-ender on the flop in your case and either had the right implied odds to keep going or I vaguely remember checking it back on the turn. The straight I cooled Dag with, I had on the flop.

Sarc/ Does anybody ever really win with Aces? /sarc.

NO. Whenever I have Aces, you all freakin’ fold. Weenies. Same bet, but I have a crap hand? Ohh, let’s all bet our pants!

Well, if everyone folds, it’s still a win… It is incredibly annoying to be patient, waiting for good cards, finally flop a set, and have no one want to play with you.

Just speaking for me, but whenever you lead the betting, I have a very narrow range of hands that I’m putting you on (JJ+, AJs+, AKo). Consequently, I either need the prospect of great odds, actual or implied, or a great hand myself in order to continue. Hopefully, I’ve both.

Cards question for everyone: why have the cool kids in tournament play (as evidenced from WSOP histories and discussed hands at places like 2+2) gone from the ‘traditional’ (3+n)x open/raise to a 2x or 2.2x? Is it to allow more room in their stacks for crazy preflop 3,4,and 5-betting? It seems like only raising 2.2x gives such good pot odds to the blinds that they’d almost be obligated to call and take a flop, even considering their bad position post-flop. I know that ‘call’ seems to be a dirty word to people these days, but why not take a flop with those odds and re-assess? It’s a contrast from posts I read about cash games where 5 and 10x opens are much more common.

I watched Daniel Negreanu play an online tournament. I don’t remember him limping, but everytime he opened the pot, it was 2x the BB. No variation at all.

The 3 bet happens so often that if a player does make a 3 bet on top of a 2x BB Open that the player can get away from the hand if necessary . . . . or make a 4 bet if he has a really good hand.

So in a way a 2x BB open might be to encourage the 3 bet. It gets hairy when someone calls the 2x and then someone 3 bets.

Depending on the participation, the whole game last about 75 minutes. 5-10 minutes is typical for the heads up.

Come join us,

But this Thursday is gonna be a very light game, IMHO…

I’m gonna be eating at 7pm PST…

nm! figured out where to get the download.

yes, I doubt if we have a game this Thursday.

Last winter, we had games on Saturday. We haven’t been to get our ducks in a row on Saturday yet this winter. I wouldn’t mind a game on Sunday afternoons either if anyone wants to play.

I read his treatise on “small ball”, where he talks about the benefits of 2.5x raises. I think it was written when 3-betting was less common, and one main benefit was seeing a cheap flop, especially where he thought his post-flop skills were far superior to his opponents’ (and the light raise could let him come in with a wider range of hands). I wonder if the drop to 2x was because people re-raise so much these days, particularly online?
