I was waiting in line at the license bureau last week, and saw a lady with a tattoo on the side of her neck. What’s the deal? What if she has to go in for a job interview? How did this neck tattoo thing get started?
I’ve seen quite a few of them. In fact, my ex had one on the right side of his neck. It was black, kind of a vine-like piece. It was actually my favorite of his.
It’s all a matter of personal preference, I’d say. What possesses some people to get a tattoo on their bicep, or their calf, or anywhere for that matter? It’s where you feel it fits best.
A DEMON!!!
I have a friend with a tattoo on her neck. She got it specifically because she never wanted to wind up working in the corporate world. Of course, now she realizes that if she wants a higher-paying job she has to look professional…
I don’t mean to come off anti-tattoo. But on the side of your neck?! Geeze, why not just put one on your forehead?
And how did this tattoo neck thing get started? Did a particular entertainer start the trend?
I think it was Rue McClanahan.
Maybe it was Bob Villa? I’m not sure.
I would think that would hurt like a bitch to have it put on your neck.
Well, neck tatoos are very popular among barrio gangs here in SoCal, and have been for a while…
According to Monty Python, it was started by the Bishop of Lester in Great Britan. They found him dead on the landing of a small British home and used the tatoo on the back of his neck to identify his Diocese.
I think on the right guy it would look hotter than hell. If you’ve got a beautiful, muscular neck and set of shoulders? God.
As for how it started…I remember that George Clooney had a neck tattoo in Dusk Til Dawn…all black, sort of celtic-ish.
But, I mean, tattooing goes back centuries, all over the body.
jarbaby
umm… I’ve seen that, too…
Kind of the opposite end of the scale:
A female friend of mine in college didn’t know how to type because her mother wouldn’t let her. Didn’t want her daughter to grow up to be a secretary or a homemaker, so she kept her out of those kinds of classes. Of course, along came the computer revolution, and now she’s hunting and pecking with the best of them…
How do you feel about tattoos on the back of one’s neck? Depending upon clothing and hair, it could be hidden.
I don’t worry much about tattoo placement, but sometimes I wonder why people get particular designs or words tattooed on themselves. The example I’m thinking of is a man with the words “white trash” tattooed on his neck.
Now, obviously everyone has different tastes and different life goals. I don’t mean to judge. Yet I don’t understand some of the tattoos I’ve seen.
I have lots of tattoos, and I love them. But on the neck? No, thanks. I have all of mine where they can be covered by ordinary clothes. I can even roll up my long sleeves one or two turns and still be covered.
A tattoo on the side of the neck would definitely limit one’s access to certain jobs or social circles. I guess if a person is willing to be denied that access, it’s his or her personal choice.
Worse than that: a friend and I were waiting in line at a combination Harley/Kawasaki dealership once, talking and giggling like a couple of middle-school girls. I turned around to see who had just come up behind us–it was an unwashed, skinny, scary-looking guy with the words “fuck you” tattooed on his cheeks. (Can I say that in MPSIMS?) Very likely a prison job, judging from the quality. Where’s that guy going to work? How’s he going to visit his mother?
