Whatcha Playin' in November '08?

It’s a new month and so it’s time to check in with dopers and ask what games they’re currently playing.

As before this is not restricted to any single type of game. Video games, computer, board games, wargames, CCG’s, pen and paper RPG’s, fantasy sports leagues, miniatures, or whatever your choice of gaming is more than welcome here.

Last month I mainly dabbled in a pile of games according to mood. I played World of Goo for the Wii and while the game itself was fine I thought it had far too little content for a $15 dollar game. I was finished in four hours of play. It was fun but not spectacularly so to justify that kind of price to play ratio.

I recently picked up Chulips which has one of the oddest themes I’ve encountered: you have to kiss everyone in town. Getting past that odd premise it’s a relatively standard adventure game; not bad but it’s not impressing me. I’m not too far into it, however.

Someone I know finished Fable 2 and is now pushing it on me as he plays through Fallout 3. I have little interest in Fable 2 due mainly to the fact that Fable was a short, poorly designed mishmash but I may be playing it soon.

However my “game” of choice for this month is mainly going to be NaNoWriMo as I push to write a 50k word novel in the next thirty days to win. If I win then I plan on getting Rock Band 2 for the Wii as my reward.

So, what are you playin’?

Just wrapped up Far Cry 2, with Mercenaries 2 and Fable 2 behind me. Next on the to-enjoy list is Red Alert 3 as well as Fallout 3.

(Far Cry 2 was good - I’m glad the story tightened up towards the end. Mercenaries 2 is hilarious, but buggy. Fable 2 is brilliant and got put right on top of my replay-stack. Red Alert 3 looks like a reskinned version of Command & Conquer 3, but so far has been hysterically funny as well as tactically deep. Too fast-paced for my taste (which is also my fear for Starcraft 2) but I can see how I can dig it. Fallout 3 . . . mmmmm, Fallout.)

WoW WotLK on November 13th

(World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King)

Um…Halo.

Picked up the first Disgaea for PS2 for $20 at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago (I’m a sucker for $5 movies and $20 games). It’s good, though probably not as good as everyone who recommended it to me said it was. I’ll definitely end up sinking 50 or 100 hours into it before I’m done, though, which makes it completely worth the price.

Disgaea 1 for ps2 is not that good lol. Well the psp version is SLIGHTLY better and then the DS version has some more minor additions. I like the NIS games a lot but I never get too fond to any particular one (what I mean is I play around 100-200 rather than 400+ some people do). I finished Phantom Brave recently and just finished the story for La Pucelle Tactics (all NIS games). If you like that kind of game, a ps2 is a real treat with so this number of NIS games which can each last about a month each. I got guitar hero world tour though I haven’t played it much yet. Next up for me will be Makai Kingdom and maybe Naruto for ps3 (I’d love to play it but not worth 60$ =). I might also get Need for Speed but I’m not sure.

I’ll be playing the Darkness and Fallout 3.

I’ll also be finishing up Cave Story.

I’ve joined some friends on a new World of Warcraft server in preparation for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Leveling goes a lot faster when you have a level 70 mage and a level 70 warlock backing you up. It’s been nearly two weeks and I’ve made it to 42. I could be pushing 70 if not for this pesky job that I’m expected to show up for five days a week.
