Whatcha Watchin' in the new 2016-2017 TV season?

I saw the first two episodes of **Atlanta **last night. Very good! It’s a dramedy about trying to build a rap career in Atlanta, starring and written by Donald Glover (Troy from Community). It’s dark and raw but has a definite lift from humor. I think it’s kind of like Better Call Saul in that regard. I wish it were 1-hour episodes! Right now it’s just 10 half hour episodes. It’s on FX.

Pamela Adlon’s show (she’s from Lucky Louie and now Louie, also the voice of Bobby Hill) Better Things is up next. It’s also on FX. I know absolutely nothing about it but I am more than willing to give her a chance.

There’s a show called **Pitch **coming up on Fox in 2 weeks. It’s about a woman who makes it in to Major League Baseball. It might be complete cheese but since I’m a huge baseball fan and also a lady, I plan to give this one a chance as well.

Looking forward to Luke Cage on Netflix, even though I wasn’t that in to *Daredevil *season 2 or Jessica Jones. Luke was my favorite part of Jessica Jones so I have high hopes. Mascots is also coming up on Netflix soon here.

In October I’m looking forward to American Housewife starring Katy Mixon who starred in Eastbound & Down and Mike and Molly. I really like her so I’m going to give her show a shot. Seems like it’s a “fish out of water” thing with her being a bit of a Roseanne-type mom moving in to an upperclass neighborhood.

At the end of October is the return (? I swear I’ve seen the pilot…) of a show starring Joel McHale and Stephen Fry called The Great Indoors. I can’t say I’m looking forward to it, as the episode I saw was craptacular. But I want to see if I can spot what drew Fry to this project.

If you want a good source for what is coming up this month and beyond in TV, check out the TV Calendar site, specifically their “New and Returning in September” page.

It’s going to be one heck of a fall for me, as not only do I have 32 shows on my calendar in September (thankfully, some of them are ending just about now) but my baseball team will be going through October and I’m also a football fan. Goodbye, books and movies! It’s fall!

I have Atlanta set up to tape, and I am falling for the constant hyping of This Is Us. I’m a sucker for an evening soap opera drama.

Atlanta was quite, quite good. Really enjoyed it.

Looking forward to a couple shows on SyFy: Aftermath and Channel Zero. SyFy has been putting out some quality TV if you ignore their movies, The Expanse is great and Dark Matter and Killjoys are both very entertaining popcorn TV.

I don’t even know what’s coming up. I miss the old Fall Preview TV Guides. (and maybe they still publish one, but I guarantee it’s not the same, just like the rest of TV Guide these days)</old fart>

I’ve seen commercials for Atlanta, and it reminds me of nothing more than that scene on Community in the episode where everyone is trying to tell a scary cabin story, and in Pierce’s, Troy comes busting in all stereotyped up trying to rob him at gunpoint. I’ll wait for the Alison Brie is a sexy werewolf show instead. (Please let that be something that happens, lol)

I usually don’t get into the fall season too much, but I did happen to catch a new reality show not that long ago - Milwaukee Blacksmith. Kinda good if you like reality. I’ll have to check out the link to the new and returning TV…

I wouldn’t have counted a Netflix series as part of the new season, but I’ll definitely be watching* Luke Cage*.

I am apprehensive about Pitch, but I hope I like it… which would, ironically, ensure its demise, with my luck.

In addition to returning favorites, I’m looking forward to the following new network shows:
[ul]
[li]Designated Survivor[/li][li]Speechless[/li][li]Pitch[/li][li]Powerless[/li][li]Shots Fired[/li][li]Still Star-Crossed (only 'cause it’s Shonda Rhimes)[/li][li]Time after Time[/li][li]Trial & Error[/li][/ul]I haven’t looked up the new Netflix/Amazon/HBO/Showtime/etc. shows yet.

I think the online version is pretty good: TV Guide Fall Preview.

Well, I wouldn’t say “old fart”.
I kind of laughed when I read the title of this, the “new 2016-19 TV Season”.
I mean, is there really such a thing anymore?

With all the different channels carrying first run shows (unlike the old days of 3 then 4 networks) and staggering their new season premier’s throughout the calendar year, is there really such a thing as a Fall beginning to a new TV season?

I miss those old days not specifically because they were the old days, but because every September was anticipated, all these new shows and returning shows starting up again. It was exciting, it was fun.

Now?

meh. I just check when the new season of shows I like (Better Call Saul, Fargo, etc…) start up again and when I see an ad for a show I think I might like (like last night’s Better Things) I’ll watch it. But as for “gearing” up to watch a new season…

I guess those days are over. :frowning:

I watched Better Things last night. It was basically *Louie *but from the perspective of a woman, who has the majority custody of the kids, so instead of it focusing on sex then kids it focuses on kids then sex. The “weird thing” about the kids (instead of being lilly white where their mom is black) is that they all have boy names. Frankie, Max and Duke (yes, Duke).

I mean, it works. I like Louie. Not sure if I can handle the emotional strain of watching double Louie.

I also added **Speechless **to my lineup, after seeing a trailer for it. It stars Minnie Driver as the mother of a son with cerebal palsy.

Not sure where you’re coming from, Richard. I’ve listed several new shows that are starting in the fall and so has **DigitalC **and Misnomer. True, fall is not the ONLY time that shows premiere now but it still is a time when many, many new shows debut. Summer does have a lot of stuff to watch but not nearly as much as the fall, when people start spending more time inside, school begins and sports wind down.

Pamela Adlon is black???

In the show Louie, the “weird” thing about the kids is that their mom is black but the kids do not look bi-racial at all.

In the show Better Things, the “weird” thing about the kids is that they are all girls with male names.

It’s even weirder because Louie is Mexican.

I still look forward to the new shows every fall, but I know what you mean…see below…

Actually, at least half of those shows are listed as “mid-season” debuts. As many shows start in December/January as September/October anymore.

TCM

Right now, I’m coping with Series Finale of one of my favorites earlier this week. I was a huge fan of ‘Rizzoli and Isles’ and the final episode aired last Monday. I’ll miss it.

The summer/mid-season finale of another favorite, SUITS (USA), aired this week as well.

Major Crimes (TNT) has two more episodes in their three-episode mid-season finale (unsure when either show returns)

I’m looking forward to three old favorites returning in Sept/Oct-

Law & Order:SVU (Season 18 starts 9/21)- the longest currently running scripted, non-animated U.S. prime time series. I thought the show was doomed with the departure of Chris Meloni (Stabler) at the end of Season 12. I lost interest in the show for the next few seasons, but it has made an impressive comeback, IMO. I hoped that Mariska Hargitay could carry the show herself and she has succeeded!

Supernatural- (Season 12 debuts on 10/13) - the Winchester boys are back in business for yet another year. This show is my guilty pleasure and I’m amazed it has lasted 12 seasons. There are rumors that it will be renewed for a 13th and possibly a short 14th season (which would allow it to hit the 300-episode mark).

And last but not least, I’m very excited about my favorite show of all (or it used to be) because my favorite character is returning- Criminal Minds (Season 12 starts on 9/28). It had already been announced that Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) would be returning in a recurring role, but with the firing of Thomas Gibson, she is now coming back as a regular cast member. There’s a lot of buzz that she may be the replacement as head of the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) with the demise of Aaron Hotcher (“Hotch”) played by Thomas Gibson.

I actually stopped watching the show after she left at the end of Season 7. She (Paget Brewster) and cast mate A.J. Cook (Jennifer Jareau “JJ”) were both shafted for Season 6. They didn’t renew (fired) Cook and informed Brewster that her role would be reduced for the upcoming season. After hundreds of thousands of fans raised hell, Cook was rehired at the end of Season 6 and is remains a central character. Brewster wanted to quit to pursue other opportunites, but she was under contract through Season 7. They ‘forced’ her to return for Sesaon 7 and she quit when her contract expired. She has returned as a guest star in two episodes since then but she is coming back full-time starting with the episode on 10/12.

Aisha Tyler has also been promoted to a series regular. Adam Rodriguez (best known as Erik Delko from CSI:Miami) is also joining the cast to fill the open ‘hot guy’ spot left by the departure of Shemar Moore.

It should be interesting.

Considering I grew up in the town on **American Housewife ** I HAVE to watch it. Interestingly, my girlfriend grew up in the town that Stars Hollow was based on, so we both have TV shows based on our Connecticut hometowns!

Other than that Designated Survivor which I hope and pray doesn’t suck because that concept of government policy has always interested Mr (Yeah I know Battlestar did the same thing too but apples and oranges)
