What's a cool thing about you?

I’m curious. Can you be a bit more specific? Which myth, which cultre, and how do you trace a family tree into myth? I’m intrigued.

Maori culture, from Aotearoa/New Zealand. It’s a very young culture, around 1200 years, so if you go back far enough they start to run out of verifiable humans and introduce Demi-Gods into the picture.

Thank you for your answere. I love mythology, and couldn’t work out how a family tree would lead into myths. Very cool.

I vote in every local election, primary and general. I feel it’s important. After all, one can’t complain about how government is run if you don’t vote.

My grandmother voted in 22 presidential elections, from 1928 to 2012. I likely won’t match her record, this year will be my 14th.

That is damn impressive. My Mom, who lived to age 101, only voted in 20.

Every time I read this thread title I think of the song What I Like About You by The Romantics

I can back a trailer (bumper pull or gooseneck) and put it just about anywhere I need it to go. AND while driving a manual shift truck :stuck_out_tongue:

When I was four years old, my dad took me to a rally in New Jersey for Nixon during his 1960 campaign. I had no idea who Nixon was and was bored to tears. After his speech, he shook many hands, including mine. I was wearing mittens because it was a cold day. My mitten came off in Nixon’s hand, and I loudly declared to my dad, “He stole my mitten!”

Nixon looked me sternly in the face and said, “I am not a crook!”

…Okay, the last sentence is a joke, but the rest is true.

Watching attempts at backing a trailer at the boat ramp is always fun.
Once saw a guy towing a fishing boat. Near the ramp he got out and disconnected the boat trailer, then turned his car 180 degrees. He had a hitch on the front of his car. Reconnected and launched his boat without backing up.

that’s kinda brilliant!

That’s a worthy skill, and certainly not everybody can do it, although every truck driver in the world has that ability.

Now, backing a 2-axle trailer, where the front axle pivots, is extremely hard. Try pushing (instead of pulling) a child’s wagon and you will understand the difficulty.

I thought so, but other boaters at the ramp called it cheating!

I’ll bet you at least a third of them went home and did the same thing to their trucks.

Back when Grandma was born 12/17/1904 one had to be 21 to vote. If she had been born when one could vote at 18, she would have toted up 23 presidential elections. Even now, to equal Grandma, a voter would have to be 102 to match her.

When I think of how much change she saw in her long life, I note her birthday, which is one year to the day after the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. My sisters and I watched the moon landing with her and Grandpa, and I am now older than Grandpa was at the time; He was born just barely in the 19th century, in October of 1900.

Some possible random things about me:

Had lunch with Tom Cruise (party of 5)
When I was a kid I was on a plane with Bob Hope (Flying out of Love Field, got to talk with him a bit)
Used to rock climb - solid 5.10
Foosball city champ 1974

I have a Pittsburgh Steeler game jersey worn by #58, Jack Lambert. I wore it one day to a favorite bar. A guy I know asked about the jersey and I said he was a friend. The guy called bullshit. I looked on my phone for a picture of us, but couldn’t find one.

A few weeks later I texted the guy that I had proof if he wanted to see it. He said he’d meet me at the bar that night, but if it was just a picture of us together at an autograph event it wouldn’t count as us being friends. I agreed.

That night I walked into the bar accompanied by #58 (who hates going out to bars, but I’d called in a favor). The guy was shocked, hell everyone there was. We had a couple beers, then I said we had to leave, as I had to be somewhere (I’d promised Jack 2 beers and we’d leave).

That is an awesome story.

I have cool-adjacent things:

  • Back in the '80s, when the current King of the Netherlands was the Crown Prince and a Naval Cadet in Den Helder, I had drinks with him a few times in a local bar;
  • in 1995 the French GIGN did an anti-terrorist assault on an airliner. A few years later, in my capacity as a support officer in Canada’s JTF 2, I met the assault team commander of that mission when he was visiting;
  • In my same capacity in JTF 2, if I was feeling bored with doing my staff stuff, I could often catch a ride in a helo to watch the guys practicing fast-roping or similar; and
  • At a Saxon and Judas Priest concert, after Saxon had finished their set and while Judas Priest was doing theirs, I met Saxon’s bass player, who happened to be relaxing with a beer in the floor area, enjoying a beer and the show.

It’s important to note that I am not claiming coolness, just cool adjacency. Like others have said upthread, I am the antithesis of cool; I’ve just lucked into some interesting situations.

I once evaded a secret service road block and found myself alone on the highway (I-95) with George HWBush and his limo caravan. But I was going N he was heading S :woman_shrugging:

A stated by the OP only the thing has to be cool!
